Does HP 383 have more of a loping sound than stock 383 ?
« on: November 23, 2013 - 02:52:13 PM »
I was told that my 1970 383 is an HP. But while the engine runs very quiet with stock mufflers and resonators and smooth, I would think that the HP383 would have more of a loping sound to it. Is there a difference in the sound ?

It has a 600 Eldebrock and I'm going to put a 750 on it this winter with possibly an Eldebrock intake once I know for sure which factory intake I have.

All my 8th edition Mopar engine book says about the standard 383 is the cam
had a total duration of 256 degrees.  And the high performance 383 had a cam
with duration of 268/283 total, with a valve lift of .450 inches. Book implies
your Cuda had the 268/283 cam.

wow, just noticed the 1962 to 1964 max wedge engines, ie the 413 and 426 Stage III,
came with a mechanical cam with 300/308 duration, and .520 inch lift!  Thats some
serious cam for 1962 to 1964.  But, they had compression ratio up to 13.5,
that could take advantage of that much duration. I heard one of those engines at a show once.
Serious lumpy sound!  Kept thinking the engine was gonna stall!

72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

the factory cams are often milder than the specs might suggest due to the conservative lobes...I would expect it to sound very little different that the milder cam in reality

Back in the day buyers would buy a HP engine car for the more flexible driving that the motor would give but didn't want the other idiosyncrasies of a true performance motor so there was very little difference at idle and low speed,  just could spice things up a bit if the right foot was used.   :burnout:
