Looking for brake photos
« on: November 23, 2013 - 08:10:21 PM »
Does anyone have good clear photos of installed rear (shoe) brake systems?  I'm looking for shots that show all the springs, shoes, and cables correctly mounted; if it matters they are 10" brakes.  Axle shafts pulled out would be a bonus

Thanks in advance!

Ask and ye shall receive.  This is the drivers side.  That's important for spring and cable placement.  Use the mirror image for the passenger side.

BTW the "small shoe" always goes in front.  :2thumbs:

Thanks Jesus, that's what I need   I'll have to look but I am not sure my brake bars have that 90 degree bend on the one (front) end, and yes I knew about the primary/secondary shoe arrangement.

No, Chryco I don't have an FSM, only Chiltons and Haynes and the pictures are lousy.

As for the gaskets, am I right that the metal ones go behind the backing plates and the foam ones go behind the axle bearing retainers???

I believe this pic is of an A-Body, but E-Bodies are the same.  I think mine has a 45 degree bend where this one has a 90, but you want it to the front anyway.  The back engages the e-brake arm.

Okay thanks!  My brake bars do have a shorter 45 degree bend, and also my upper return springs are one short and one long (maybe wrong ones installed before??); the adjuster cables and levers look the same though.  Is the adjuster cable "washer" end supposed to be sandwiched between the (upper) return spring hooks, or lay flat against shoe retainer?

11" are different , the cable should be behind both springs

when i put my 3.91 unit in i had to pull the axles out if remember correctly.  replaced the foam gaskets then.  you can see it in this picture.
