Vanishing Point movie car WIW
« on: November 28, 2013 - 09:28:15 AM »
Hi guys,
I'm in the process of working a deal on this car that I'm sure most of you have seen. The VP movie clone w/movie script for very high 130k asking price. http://www.webeautos.com/detail-1970-dodge-challenger-vanishing_point_r_slash_t-used-9425348.html I've been dealing with the owner for a year now not the broker. I have a 1970 very nice driver Buick stage 1. All original w/new paint & carpet, headliner 3 years ago. Tripple brown th400 auto floor shifter. She's a real nice all matching #'s car and actually books for way more than the challenger I think. I like the movie cars and own a few for display at my drive in theatres. The owner wants some cash with the trade and I understand the challenger is more desirable . The reason he still has the car for sale is he believes the asking price is reasonable w/the script which I don't really care so much about. I am willing to add some greenbacks to get the car but to be fair shouldn't have to right? In todays market if some of you guru's wanted a car like this, what is a fair price for this car. I do appreciate and respect your input.

Thanks in advance,

  Bill

The link didn't work but you could get a pretty nice challenger for a quarter of the price these days. For that money you can buy an original hemi car.

Is it a really movie car or a clone of the care? I'd say it really depends on how important that movie pedigree is to you and how well its document trail is. I'd expect it to have very clear documents to tie it in to the movie as proof of its involvement. Title transfers, insurance papers, vin tracking or some other concrete evidence above and beyond heresay that someone say it was there and I snagged a copy of the script to throw in the deal. But the clone in your description is a big flag to me. Cloned at what point? For the movie, by a fan of the movie, by someone who just had a script?

A very clean, white R/T Challenger could easily be found for a lot less than  that price to duplicate the same scene at your drive in. While on display, all you have to do is add one or two words to a display card that 90% of the poeple will never notice to create the perception it was a movie car. IMO, if this was not a genuine movie car awith document trail and you aren't too concerned with the script, it is not worth the money. History and documents are how these cars gain significant value over simply being a collection of parts.

According to this statement in the writeup, none of the VP original cars must exist:

"Chrysler crushed all cars including the cruisers because of slight nudity at the end of the film and narcotics(uppers) image as portrayed in the movie by star Barry Newman to keep him awake on his trek. These are now common to network TV today."

Well, lets say a numbers matching R/T is worth $60k. A non numbers VP clone with any engine is worth $40k. In my mind, that means he is wanting $80k for the original script with the Cleavon notes. He notates that it may be worth $75k alone. While it is certainly a very nice restoration, the most accurate VP clone is certainly an argueable point. If the script doesn't mean much to you, why pay for it unless you want to take the risk of selling the script seperatly. IMO, $75k for the script is high. I don't think you could get that these days. If you put it at even $40k, which seems high to me but I have no idea of script collectibility pricing, you would be paying $130k for a package worth $80-90k.

According to these guys, scripts aren't worth much, http://www.hollywoodscriptshop.com/index.html . These guys do tend to put a higher rice on Hollywood collectibles: http://www.hollywoodmemorabilia.com/item-memorabilia/signed-scripts-and-screenplays/ but nothing in teh 5 digit range.

I'd pass or try to convince him to seperate. If the script is that valuable, he should have no problem selling it. If he is insistent upon them as a pair, then he knows the value of the individual pieces is not there.

I don't care about the script. I'm just trying to work on a trade for this car and wondered what you fellows thought she is worth in todays market? I was thinking 30-40k maybe more to the right collector. She looks nice maybe nicer than I need. I would like a nice driver don't really want a show car but he might want to do a trade w/ a little cash
I'll keep you updated. I have to send more photo's of the stage 1 to the owner on Friday.
Thanks,
Bill

Owner thinks way too much of his car. Not a real movie car, not the best resto out there, maybe not even the best VP clone as I don`t think they had Goodyear Eagles on them! And all the BS about scrapping all the cars because of nudity!  :smilielol:

I've never read anything about the cars being scrapped because of nudity or drug-use. I have consistently read, from Barry Newman and the guy who was the stunt coordinator (i.e., responsible for setting up the driving scenes) that the identify of the cars was never expected to be a bid deal and so no one kept records of that type of thing within the production.

As for Chrysler records, it looks like the only records they ever kept were data to help them predict how much to make of what to meet sales demand. Considering that there aren't even any records of what options came with what paint colors, I'm pretty sure there are no records of what cars were used to film a movie that no one expected to be remembered in 5 years time.

But, as I always say, never say never

The car shown is Cometstorms's old car. I have pics and info on it when it was Burnt Orange. As for the VP cars I won't bother wasting my time with that. Every once in a while someone says they have one of the original ones or that some still exist.

I think you're answering your own question here.  This car got you thinking of acquiring a VP car.  This car is NOT an original movie car, so it has no extra value attached to it, like say an original Warner Brothers General Lee would.  You don't care about the script, and you're looking for a nice driver/display car.  This car is both over restored and over represented for what you're looking for.  I think you can get what you want far cheaper by picking up a good clean driver and simply painting it white.  Get a repro Colorado license plate for the front and you're in business!
