Seems to be an awful lot of BS, or a nicer way to put it "exaggeration" on this topic

MOPARAL:
Not true. Some of us grew up in the day when you could actually do that with our cars easy enough. did you know in 1970 when I had been driving a couple of years the speed signs said--any reasonable speed when you were out of the city. On the penn/ohio in 1971 , I passed police cars on the median while I was doing 120 plus and my dad would say to me, keep the needle on the speedo we dont want to hit any wet spots with the cops out. We will get a carless driving ticket.

Al, maybe because some folks haven't went as fast as some of these folks that have responded, they think think that no one has done it.  Using that logic, I have never piloted a space shuttle, so I guess no one else has either....

I grew up in a small farming community with long straight roads bordered with nothing but corn fields.  It was almost a ritual among the "car guys" to see how fast their latest car would go.  Many of these cars were 10-15 year old beaters which probably weren't safe at 60, much less the 120 or better that most of them would do with their well used big inch V8s.  At that speed with the aerodynamics of a barn door, the best you could do was suggest which direction they should go.  We thought we were bulletproof.

I decided to try out the new chip in my duramax diesel company truck today. It weighs 9,800 lbs. Most vehicles now are set at 95/99 mph. I set my chip for 137 extra hp and 260 extra ft tq. I set the top spd for 125. I can even reprogram the shift points and rpm points. And yes, it did 125 out in the desert today. I now have the fastest company truck in our company,  but will not try it again.  The company gave me the ok to buy the reproamable chip control to see if I could get 1 mpg more. It cost them 485 bucks to find out :roflsmiley:

For me 135 in my dad's 76 gran torino.  Not scared just stupid and it was the middle of the night.  The cops still had a fury intercepter that they had to use to catch the speeders with the stock beasts at the time.

Stock car, 138mph at Kansas Speed Way. i think they said the pro's get up to around 160 or 165 on that track. i didn't have the balls to go any faster. The Petty experience. I highly recommend you guys try this. I'm not a big Nascar guy but it was a blast! i was going so fast in the corners i couldn't blink :o, my eyes were burning so bad, i was afraid i was going to hit the wall!  :roflsmiley:  that helmet does get heavy in the corners.

Told I was doing in excess of 132mph in my Valiant VG Pace.
Two mates, one front one rear in their hot ford's sandwiched me between them. My tacho was showing 5500rpm and speedo 110mph, the speedo didn't go any higher however the tacho was showing over 6000 when I pulled on my tail lights and the rear car slowed slightly and I pulled out and passed them. When we got to our destination the first thing they wanted me to do was pop the hood as they thought I had a V8, but no it was a 245 hemi 6cyl. They told me they couldn't catch me and both of their cars had been clocked at 128 and 130mph many times in the past and yet I was pulling away from them.   :burnout:   :burnout:

  MOPAR rules again.   :woohoo:

No the motor wasn't quite stock but I wasn't telling them that either.   :stirpot:

Prior to owning my 1970 Cuda Convertible (see "Hello from Minnesota" in the Newb section), I had a 351 powered 1979 Mercury Capri.  This was the car I "cut my teeth on" so to speak.  The 351 was bored and stroked to 380 cid.  My best time at Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) was 11.61 at 115 mph.  This was on pump 93 octane and thru the 3" flow master exhaust.  All I did was put slicks on the car, it was street legal.

Before turning it into a street legal drag car, I had the speedometer needle bouncing off the trip odometer reset at the bottom of the speedometer.  Guessing somewhere arround 110-ish.  Amazing how narrow the road got at that speed...

Lets see...

the fastest I'VE driven was 120 in my chally.... foot on the floor but still pullin' strong.... I think it can do about 140-45 ish maybe as it sits. then right behind that was the time I took my family's lifted & chipped duramax to 105 and let off cuz I was about to crap myself. A 7'3" tall, double cab, 3/4 ton truck on a narrow, bumpy, hilly backroad with nothing but grass either side. The truck itself is almost as wide as that road. It was suprisingly stable, and had a lot left to go, but I thought any faster would have been suicide... aside from the fact its a duramax, and it might have decided to blow up right then and there, as they do  :stirpot: :poopoke: (don't deny it, its true. Cummins are invincible!).

oh....... too many cars. not enuff money... not enough time....

Well it started years ago in my 71 340 duster with a 2.76 rear gear. A few cars were heading to Toronto to check out the local late night street racing. A Camaro flies by all of us. We all of course try to catch it. One by one the other cars start to fall back, geared too high. I was slowly catching it, got to the bumper, but had to slow down because of traffic ahead. When I looked down I was going 143, still pulling slightly. Man when I hit the brakes that thing used up all 3 lanes to slow down, lol. I can laugh now, but my passenger and I were pretty quiet for awhile. Then several years after that I had my 70 Cuda on a freshly paved new highway. Middle of the day, no cars around, nice 440, 4 spd. I hit 153 i think, well it was a bit past 150 anyway, I think it would have done 155. And yes both cars had accurate (well at 60mph) speedo's. It sure sounded sweet, car floated a little. Nice new smooth road, beautiful day, it was allot of fun. But with all this said, I was pretty stupid, both speeds were way to fast for the cars and tires.
