tire and rim combo ok?
« on: November 29, 2013 - 06:07:15 PM »
hey guys i need an opinion before i order anything. within a couple months im ordering rims and tires for my stock suspension 8 3/4 rear 73 cuda.

i have decided on the REV classic 100 anthracite rims i would like 17 inch rims all around.

i need to know what combo would work as in the backspacing for the front and rear, tire height, and rim width. I would like to fit a 275 tire in the back and a 245 in the front. From what i understand 4.5 bs will work with 245 in the front but i am unsure also for the series of the tires. I would like a slight raked looked (back higher than front)

I think 17s with 8 inch width and 4.5 backspace will be ok in the rear for a 275 tire but what series size tire should i get to make everything ok and i can feel safe ordering them.

I have P275/40R17 tires on 17x9 rims (4.5" backspace) on the rear of my '73 Challenger with no problem.

I originally had P245/45R17 tires on 17x8 rims (5.125" backspace) on the fronts but I had to downsize to P225/45R17 tires on the front because the combination of the 8" width and 5/125" backspace was creating some rubbing with the P245.  I think I would have been OK if I changed to 7" rims on the front but was easier to downsize the tires.

You'll need a 17x9 in the back for a 275. Smallest recommended rim for a 275/40/17 is 9", so you won't find many tire shops that will squeeze it onto a 17x8". Plus, you wouldn't want to, as it will create a lot of sidewall bulge that will hurt handling.

For rim size and backspace, I'd run a 17x9 with a 5" backspace in the rear and a 17x8 with at least 4.5" backspace up front. In the front any backspace from 4.5" to 5" should work just fine. You don't want to go more than 5" because of the possibility of tie rod interference.

For tires, you'd be looking at 245/45/17's and 275/40/17's. It would be nice to run 275/45/17's out back for a little more tire height, but they just don't make them anymore.

With that set up everything should fit pretty well. The front with 17x8's, 4.5" to 5" of backspace, and 245/45/17's should be well clear of everything. In the back with a 17x9", 5" of backspace, and a 275/40/17 you should be ok. It will be tight with the stock spring location, but it should work on most cars without any problems.

I have 275/40/17's on 17x9's with a 5" backspace on all 4 corners of my Challenger. I had to roll the passenger side fender lip and run some negative camber up front, and in the back I'm WAY clear with a B body rear and 1" spring offset. You might also look into Summit's Legend 5 series rims, they have the same 5 spoke design and are available in all of the sizes you would need. They're also on sale until "cyber Monday" if you're ready to pull the trigger now. That's what I have on my Challenger.

Looks like you can get a BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW-2 in both the 245/45/17 and 275/40/17 sizes. I ran that tire on my 2004 SRT4, actually ran the 245/45/17. It says its an "ultra high performance summer" tire, but I had good luck with it in the rain and even a small amount of snow on a few occasions. They did get a little noisy as they wore down, and that's the biggest thing I've ever see anyone have against them on TireRack, they rate very well in all the performance categories. I can't hear the tires over any of my exhausts anyway  :grinno:. It's a 300AA treadwear tire, so its great when it comes to traction. I'd definitely run them again, in fact, I may end up with a set on my Duster.

You can check them out at TireRack http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=g-Force+T%2FA+KDW+2&frontTire=445YR7GFTAKDW2&rearTire=74YR7GFTAKDW2&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

You can also get the Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport in those sizes, or the Kumho Ecsta SPT. The Bridgestone's are great tires as well, although I haven't personally run them. The Kumho's are pretty popular as well, and pretty cheap too. Not as nice as the KDW's or RE760's, but a pretty good tire for the price.

You could if they made that size. But like the 275/45/17 that would be perfect, they just don't make that size in a 17.

That's an awfully tall tire, even in the back. You might be able to make it work though, there's a few people here that run that size.
