Heater Box TRASH to TREASURE
« on: November 29, 2013 - 06:29:29 PM »
Ok....I've worked with some bad parts before but this Heater Box has to be the worse sample I've ever had to restore....
The guy who supplied me with this junk is a member here so I won't bash him too much....He no longer owns the car, so I'm guessing he don't really care... :roflsmiley:

Here's what greeted me first thing this morning...

Six hours later, with the help of a "deluxe" gasket kit from DMT  and a new heater core.....

There are still some areas actually missing, but I just fixed the cracks and trimed the broken edges to clean it up some...

This isn't going in an OE Gold car by any means, but once mounted in place it will "do the job"  :2thumbs:

Very nice work!  I am doing my non-A/C heater box for my '70 Challenger myself.  Bought the DMT kit as well.  I did the disassembly a while back and some painting of the metal parts, so I'm at the point now where I just need to apply the gaskets and reassemble.  If you don't mind me asking, what did you do to get the housing (plastic/fiberglass) to look new, and how did you get the yellow part number stamp to look new?  Thanks.

I wet sand the box with 600 then clear coat with Satin Clear. This box had a couple of fiberglass repairs as well which I paint with a mixture of greys and blacks before the clear coat.

I had the stamps remade at my local Staples Store, but I'm pretty sure Sylvain sells them http://www.71sg.com/stamps.html

Nicely done my friend!   :clapping:
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Very impressive.

Question - Should there be a gasket on the back-side of the bracket that is attached to the heater core's copper tubes? (see attached_annotated photo)  Thanks.
