No points using a unilite distributor, cap and rotor are in good shape, carb is a brand Holley black diamond 850 DP. I suppose I will just start trying different things until I get it. I think I will start with the choke first, I will need to figure out some way to choke it down when it is cold that should be easy, then go to the firing system, distributor, cap, rotor, etc. I really need to get it to someone that has a better ear than me to fine tune the engine. Back to my other question for anybody that has an opinion. Can this damage anything while running cold?

If it discolored the headers you most likely are running lean. Richen the mixture or find some way to make
a choke on that carb. You may have done yourself a dis service cutting the carb up.

cuda man I think you are correct. I wish at this point I would have just changed the intake to get hood clearance. Although I will say I contemplated buying a carb without a choke body when purchasing the carb. Because I don't drive the car in cold weather. I opted to go with the choke and then I had the clearance issues, plus the fact I could not get the choke adjusted to the right setting for my car. I probably made a bad decision and now its gonna cost me even more unless I can figure out a way to get some kind of choke on this carb I will be buying a new one. This is assuming the choke is the problem! We shall see.

No, I was not kidding...I learned many years ago not to assume anything.  Unfortunately, I seem to relearn that about every two years.  I am 98% sure that is not the problem, but it is easy to eliminate and make it 100%

Everything on the car is brand new, including the carb. I think I will figure some way to choke the carb off on start up and see if it pops when cold. If it does not then I will know it is the lack of a choke. I wouldn't expect to have this problem in warm weather. I have been on a few forums and talked to a few of my buddies. It is quite common to run without a choke in these cars with built engines. I should be able to start diagnosing Sat. or Sun. I will keep you all informed.

once you know the plug is still good, just crank it up, and dribble a little fuel into the primaries...if it quits popping, then you know the car is lean...or, if it is not popping back thru the carb, put on a glove for safety, and cover half the primary side with your hand...manual choke, so to say 

ETA: carb cleaner is safer to spray into the carb than dribbling gasoline unless you are set up to safely add the gas....

good call Steve. It has never backfired through the carb so I think I should be safe.
