Rear Speakers.... 70 Cuda what fits ?
« on: December 02, 2013 - 02:11:56 PM »
I know the opening is for 6x9's, but is there any difference from one brand/style to the next that I need to be aware of for them to fit the existing bolt holes/etc in the metal frame?

I'm getting a "new" original radio with modern electrics, so I want to put some speakers in the rear now.

Any 6x9 should bolt right in, industry standard size, so hole location is the same.

Thanks !  I was afraid that after 43 years they may have changed the "industry standard".   :D

Places like crutchfield sell adapter plates with all sorts of bolt patterns if you run into any issues. I fabbed up my own to mount 5x7's in the 6x9 opening since I already had the speakers.

I bought the Pioneers I linked to above, and they did NOT fit.  Too fat in the basket to mount from above, and if mounted from below the grille doesn't fit.  The screw holes were in the perfect location.  I spaced them up and ran them that way.

Anytime you purchase a replacement speaker set for an OEM app ... don't buy something designed to blow your eardrums out. That speaker set and those similar in peak power handling are going to have very fat cages and equally fat magnets ... which is going to mean bottom mount only or get out the dremel and grind back a quarter inch all around.

As mentioned bolt pattern hasn't changed, but there is the off chance you'll run into vehicle specific speakers. Mostly Toyotas, German makes and exotics.

Also ... 99 times out of 100, bottom mounting eliminates the ability to use the speaker's grill. I'm not really a fan of speaker grills, but if you want to showcase your speaker brand, find a speaker that you can top mount. Fit guides from places like crutchfield aren't really all that helpful as they don't actually research the measurements of every make and model ... they just see 6x9 on the factory spec sheet and tell you that every 6x9 they have will fit. And they will ... just not always how you want them to.
