torqueflite 727 match for 340 rebuild
« on: December 04, 2013 - 10:23:59 PM »
I have a 727 with numbers PK4329438 that looks to have come from an 84 truck based on a index someone posted on this site in 2009.  I'm in the process of a rebuild and want to know if I should put the time into a rebuild of this or look for another transmission.  I have a 73 barracuda building to Cuda specs.  So far I have rebuilt a 72 340 and will be putting a 3.23 or 3.55 center section.  Any thoughts?  I'm researching the internet but I'm new to this and it's a bit confusing.  This will be a driver that I'm trying to stay relatively close to dates but may abandon that based on budget.

As long as it has the long tailshaft &  the correct tailhousing to accept the console shift support bracket the truck trans should have some HD parts in it & should work well  :2cents:

As CP, it should work just fine.

What kind of rebuild did the 340 get? If it's a fairly stock rebuild a 904 would work fine as well, especially for a driver. The 727 is a stronger transmission, but it also has more parasitic loss than a 904, so less power to the ground. If you have a mild 340, the 904 will hold up fine and will be more efficient too.

Thanks.  What is considered a mild 340? The 340 is at .040 over with J heads, an oversized cam for a moderate rumble with stock converter, an LD340 intake and stock exhaust manifold from a 78 truck.  We're thinking that it will be over 300 HP.  The 904 is matched number to the 318 matched car.  It'll be mostly cruise nights and infrequent track runs, just to clean it out of course.  I'll measure the 727 but are these typically longer and then I need to adapt the drive shaft etc?

Yes the 727 is longer & heavier & will require shortening the driveshaft . the 904 will take a lot of abuse especially if you rebuild it , you could use a later 999 with a lock up converter etc or a 518 with OD .
A 340 as you want to build would be considered mild , most were 10:1 compression & were rated low at 275 HP & made 300 hp stock so with a better cam 320 + is within reach .

Thanks so much for the guidance.  I've also read in a thread that the 904 can be beefed up.  I don't plan on racing this car but most things in life are unplanned so I want to be cautious :2thumbs:

I also have a 340 with a 904 behind it. My 340 is perhaps a touch stronger than yours with it being .060 over, X heads and TTI headers. I had the 904 rebuilt and put in a Transgo shift kit but it's not set up overly crisp. I've done a few runs at the track and the tranny handled it well. If I were you I would sell the 727 and put the money into the 904. Good performance that's easier on the wallet.

Thanks.  I'm looking into the variety of kits.  Are there any recommended rebuild kits; Mancini, Summit (Performance Automatic,TCI Auto)etc. or any that I should stay away from?
