Tachometer or oil pressure gauge?

Hi all,

My '72 Challenger's gauge cluster has the silly cross thing on the far right, so I thought it might be a good idea to either put an oil pressure gauge or a tachometer there.
What would you guys say is the most useful?

Those clusters, like the one I have, are those different depending on whether it's a Rallye or not? I've seen the flashy ones with combined meters and stuff so I guess that's the case.

Guess I would probably choose the oil pressure gauge . . . . :dunno:   If you don't have a temp gauge, that is always a good choice as well . . . .  :thumbsup:

who makes a tach that fits that small hole and looks stock? is it a royal pain to install?

I just did an oil pressure gauge conversion on my Dart.  I bought a 2" electrical oil pressure gauge and tore it apart.  I mounted the mechanism into the gauge cluster housing where the AMP gauge was originally.  I took the face off of the AMP gauge and screwed it to the oil pressure gauge.  The dash will still look stock but I'll have an oil pressure gauge and a low pressure light.

You might be able to do the same thing with your standard gauge cluster.  Do some measuring...you might be able to just mount the entire gauge in the existing hole.(that wouldn't look stock though)

Rallye clusters have the tach, speedo, clock, and the 4 piece gauge (oil, temp, amps, fuel)

The empty spot on the standard gauge cluster (which is what is sounds like you have) was actually for a clock.

For a manual I might choose a tach over oil pressure, but it'd be a close call.

Depending on your budget, I do believe there are companies out there which will make you a multi gauge that fits into the spot.  It would be a one off custom job so bring your wallet  :money:

I went Tach as pictured in the URL because I went with a standard 3 guage cluster for everything else like my other cars.

That looks really good! From where did you get it?
Since my mechanical skills are somewhat limited, I'm pretty sure that this should be something I should start fixing with AFTER next summer :)

You can get this tach from year one. Perfect fit works well but a little hard to see due to its position and size.

Is it possible to switch the gauges around? You could put the tach right next to the speedo and move the amp gauge to the end.

Disassembly of the guages was very straightforward and there was only 2 screws holding the blanking plate in.

No problemo  :2cents:

How hard was this to do and how much dissasembly? I ask because I am good an engine work but wiring it not my strongest automotive skill. I am very interested in a tach.
