69CHARGERMD's 1970 Challenger restoration
« on: December 05, 2013 - 08:48:40 PM »
I got this last week. 318 car, California all it's life until 2 months ago, now in Kentucky with me. I have all kinds of questions as I tear into it. I hope everyone doesn't mind helping me thru the process.
Plan is to totally disassemble the car, send it out for paint and body work, and i'll put it all back together. This is what I did with my 65 Belvedere, and had a great time.
Plan is a big block stroker, 727 trans, and a DANA will be going in. Street car, pump gas motor.
Car has the original paint, interior and drive train right now, but it's a bit beat. I am going to keep everything i remove and am documenting the whole car as i take it apart.
Needs a trunk pan and one small patch on the passenger lower fender, otherwise it's very solid and rust free. Floors, doors, frame, etc all in excellent shape.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Did the rear tail panel come black OR silver ?
(is the silver because it's a small block? )
The rear panel and trim seem to be all one, I have seen alot of cars with black on this portion.
Just curious what the options would be ?

Can't beat a 70 challenger! Check out my restoration thread (in my sig). The people around here are great. Do you have the fender tag and maybe a build sheet?

I think the black tail panels came with RTs and TAs, and base and SEs had the argent (silver) tails. Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong

If you're not using those body side mouldings save them. People doing complete restos have a hard time finding them.

:iagree:  There were some threads recently on them and that side shot with the molding removed is a great shot because there has been debate as to the attachment method.  Some years use the plastic clips and some use spring clips in holes in the body at different places.  Also for different years the moldings, perhaps the fronts only, are different lengths.

It'll be fun seeing the resto!  Hope it goes smoothly.  Looks like a really solid car!

Back in the early 80's, I took that tail piece off of a SE car.  Your car looks good.  Should be a lot of fun without repairing a bunch of rust.

See if your fender tag has A63 on it.

Jim, here is the fender tag, I decoded it after I bought it.  One of the codes, and I have to check is for a "western sport special"
A63 is on the tag.

Edison, thanks, car is solid, easy to take apart, bolts coming off nicely due to lack of rust, no panel replacement required thus far except trunk pan,

Superblue and challenger, thanks, I kept the side molding, several pieces are good, a few are banged up, I'm not planning on putting it back on.

Thanks guys.

Doug.  :2thumbs:

Western Sport Specials are pretty rare. I know you have plans for the car, and I don't blame you, but I'd be tempted to restore it to stock. And you don't here me say that too often
