Painted my car, now a question for the paint guru's
« on: December 09, 2013 - 09:17:01 AM »
Well I finally got around to painting my car, here is a picture before I start the cut and polish process.

My question is how much compound do you usually have to use?  I painted it with DuPont Chroma One, and I am going to use the 3M Perfect-it compound system, but they sell it in pints and quarts, just don't want to buy too much if I don't need it.

A lot will depend on how much if any orange peel is in the paint. Are you going to wet sand? It looks good in the
picture. I would probably plan on a quart, but I've never used their system.  :dunno:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Thanks, the orange peel is not bad at all, and yes, I am going to wet sand with 1500 then 2000 first.

No, but it is a U code car, and the hood is original, not a repop.

wet sand with the 2000 grit and then use a 3M trizac 3000 grit  pad on your D.A. to remove the wet sand scrathces before you start buffing with a medium buffing compound or light buffing compound depending on the amount of removal needed. The 3M pads about $8.00 each eliminate the need to do a lot of buffing.

Thanks, I actually had that wrong.  I will wet sand with 1000, then 1500, then da with 3000 trizact, then cut with 3M 36060, followed by 06064 and 06068 polish.  I did not know if I should by 16oz or 32oz bottles of the compound/polish.

Buy the 32 oz bottles. What, if any, that you have left won't make a damn bit of difference and I'd rather have 4-5 oz left than need 2-3 oz to finish the job. Kinda like the old saying- "there's no such thing as TOO much beer, but there sure as hell is such a thing as not enough beer".
