Rallye gauge wiring ?
« on: December 16, 2013 - 03:41:02 PM »
I bought some gauges that are suppose to be working. I'm wanting to make sure that I don't mix up any wires so I need to test my gauges. Can I hook 12v from the battery to the left arrow to check them ?  Is the right arrow where the coil wire goes or is it the hot lead and can I hook a jumper straight from the battery for power to check the tach ? I would like to have my cluster sitting in my lap and run jumpers from each terminal to the dash wires in order to double check everything before I bolt it in.

I have a spare cluster & a 12 volt power supply and just did this for you.

Yes, if you put 12v to the limiter (left arrow) and ground out the 3 gauges the needles should move.

The right arrow (tach) is for 12v, the smaller post is for the coil. I've checked tachs by running jumper wires from the battery and coil and revving the engine. You'll also have to ground the tach.

Thanks !  But, I'm confused. (not hard)

Two posts on tach. One is coil and the other is battery. How do I ground it ?

How do I ground it ?

From the tach's housing (or cluster) to any metal on the car, battery's negative is the best. When I tested mine that's how I did it, however my tach's were loose and out of the cluster which made it real easy.

From the tach's housing (or cluster) to any metal on the car, battery's negative is the best. When I tested mine that's how I did it, however my tach's were loose and out of the cluster which made it real easy.

I used the cluster body for the ground to battery. Started the car and then laid the coil jumper onto the coil and the engine died. I then put the ground jumper on the tach body and the engine did not die.

The tach when installed in the car would ground through the cluster. So since its apparently shorting out,  the internal wiring is somehow not insulated properly. I called the guy I got it from and he's sending a replacement.

Btw, I verified that it should be grounding through the cluster body by using my old set.

Thank you very much for your assistance !!  :clapping:
