Do you paint gas tanks?
« on: December 17, 2013 - 12:01:27 PM »
Do you paint the gas tank on a 71 cuda? If so what colour?  Also do you paint the straps?  Is this the correct one? ?
Check out this item I found on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/motors/link/?nav=item.view&id=230830959747

No, I would not paint a new tank.  The only tank worth buying is a Spectra.  Look at RockAuto...they had the best price when I bought mine.  The one in the link is painted and doesn't look very good.  When you paint a new tank, it ends up looking used.  You can't beat the look of a brand new one...unpainted.

For the straps you have two choices.  You can buy replacement steel straps and RPM them...or you can spend a little more money and get them in SS.

I don't agree.  It depends on the application.  I wouldn't paint them but I have powder coated them and they look great and hold up well since the sun doesn't hit it.  I always buy S.S. straps and rather then the rubber strips between the strap and the tank I will undercoat the inside facing the tank.  It's protects the tanks yet looks clean from the opposite side.  Just my opinion.

Daveh,  are you powder coating the stainless steel straps?

Did you leave your tank un powder coated?

No I haven't powder coated the straps.  Like I said I spray undercoating on the back side of the strap and let it dry real well and then install.  That way it grips the tanks.

I bought a spectra tank a few years ago and wasnt happy with the "new" finish on it so I bought a rattle can of Eastwoods Tank Tone paint which gave it more of a flat gray look which I am happy with. Not sure what the oem look is though, and I think I painted the straps with it also.

I painted mine......but I am not going OEM.  I used Eastwood Rattle Can Tank Tone, I painted the straps too.  They look good after a year.

Factory was not painted. Do what makes you happy........not others!

I coated mine with RPM so it will stay looking new longer.

I had mine powdercoated and hand polished the stainless steel straps.

I never planned on painting a gas tank. That being said the one in my car looked pretty old the and straps were getting some surface rust. So I painted it and the straps up to make them look better. Used "rust stopping" paint so the straps should hold up longer.

I did order new straps before I did this and the new straps weren't even close to working. Hence the paint job.
