mystery stripes
« on: December 17, 2013 - 11:34:06 PM »
When I bought my 70 barracuda 30 years ago, it had a black hockey stripe with no call out. There was also a solid black stripe that picked up just underneath the front tip of the rear hockey stripe and ran toward the front. The second stripe ran just along the upper portion of the door, along the front fender (just below the top lip) to the front and swooped down into a smaller hockey style stripe similar to what was on the rear. Does anyone know, did the factory ever put a stripe like this on or do you think it was done by the owner? I know the car came with a 6 cylinder with column shift auto. It was a high car for its group. The stripes are long gone, so sorry no pictures available.

Sounds like an add-on to me. I've never seen anything like that but I'm no expert.

I've never seen anything like that either.

Reminds me of a time many a couple of decades back at Carlisle when I was asking for the stripes that were on the AMT convertible Challenger model. They were like regular R/T stripes, except that in the back of the car they merged with something like a bumblebee stripe. Guy at the booth looked at me like I was crazy

I have seen something along the same lines as what you are saying, i am sure it was a pre production stripe that never made it to production release. Sounds like someone from many years ago may have seen the same stripe advertised that was never released and decided to make their own stripes i am guessing.

I restored a 70 barracuda convertible a few years ago, it had the factory body side moldings. It had a pinstripe that circled the molding . You can veiw it here http://www.performancecargraphics.com/Stripes_Lettering/Barracuda/70_Mid_Pinstripe.htm

Hey John, that is a factory option on Barracuda moldings buddy. I have seen it painted and taped on in different colours too.

The previous owner couldn't decide if he wanted a 'Cuda or Camaro?

Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

If you exclude pinstripes (including those on M46 equipped cars) there were three stripe options.

The 'Cuda had what people refer to as hockey stick stripes but were actually just called sport stripes. They were tape and were black only. They included the engine callout.

Mid-year a second sport stripe option was added. All models could be ordered with the sport strobe stripe in either black or white. Sassy Grass Green 'Cudas could be ordered with a fluorescent stripe in Chartreuse Radiant. Moulin Rouge 'Cudas could be ordered with the same fluorescent stripe in Magenta Radiant. These stripes were also tape.

AAR 'Cudas of course had a different strobe stripe that was standard and could not be deleted. It was tape and came in black only.

Any car ordered with the optional body side moldings included a surrounding tape stripe. The moldings were available in black, white, blue, green, and red. They were available on all models but could not be ordered in conjunction with any of the sport stripes.

That's a sweet looking SS/RS ... I would have trouble deciding too! :ylsuper:

I honestly don't remember. I probably have some copies of original photos, but nothing on my computer that I remember.

One other thing to consider is that Mopar accessories often offered stripes that were different than factory offerings. These could be added by dealers. Not saying that's the case here, it's just something that has to be considered.

Thanks Ken,

I figured you were the one to ask about such things, i only vaguely remeber seeing them one time but did not take full notice of what i was looking at for a detailed discription. :dunno: But thanks for chiming in buddy :2thumbs:
