MANUAL TO POWER STEERING CONVERSION
« on: December 21, 2013 - 06:38:45 PM »
HEY GUYS, IM CONVERTING A 340 71 CHALLENGER TO POWER STEERING. I HAVE A SAGINAW PUMP, SAGINAW BRACKETS, AND PURCHASED THE 2 PULLEYS AT THE MOPAR NATS. AFTER BOLTING ALL IN, THE PUMP IS 3/4 OF AN INCH FORWARD MORE THAN THE CRANK PULLEY. THE CRANK PULLEY MEASURES 3 1/4 INCHES DEEP. CLASSIC INDUSTRIES MEASURED THEIR PULLEY FOR MY APPLICATION AND IT WAS 3 1/4  INCHES SO THE PULLEYS I HAVE ARE CORRECT. WHY IS THIS NOT BOLTING UP? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

There are big block pump pulleys and small block pulleys. If  you have the wrong one on, you will have a misalignment just like you are seeing. Find a similar setup and measure the pump to pulley distance, then check yours.

Did you get your pulley alignment figured out?
I have a 70 340 and have a 1/4" difference with the power steering pump pulley further forward than the crank pulley.
Saginaw pump, Saginaw brackets, Crank pulley #3614378, Water Pump Pulley #2951836
 :dunno: :clueless:
Could use a little help too.
Thanks

I got the kit and pulleys from bouchillon to use the big block pulley on small block. Works good. I did have to shim a little to match up but it is great so far. There seems to be umpteen million different pulley configurations out there so going with a matched set from bouchillon seemed smartest for me.

Thanks, Were their Crank and Water Pump Pulleys the same size as the ones you had?
Could you have just gotten the BPE Power Steering Pump Bolt & Spacer Kit?

I was able to get them to line up with a couple washers between the pump housing and front bracket.

I only had a 1 groove crank pulley so I had to swap anyway. Can't remember if the wp pulley was the same or not. I will see if I can find the old pulleys and compare

Thanks but no need go digging for your old pulley, I was able to line them up by shimming with some washers.
