Alterktion Swap
« on: December 21, 2013 - 11:36:08 PM »
Hey everyone, been awhile since I posted anything so I wanted to throw this out there to the masses.  Just completed the swap over to the Alterktion suspension and what a HUGE difference it makes.  My 70 Cuda drives like a new car!  Its unbelievable how much improvement in the steering and ride quality it has now.  If you are thinking about getting one, do it.  It took me a few days to get it in with a lift.  While I was at it, I put new headers on and the clearance is amazing.  No more steering box in the way, oil pan is completely accessible.  The directions are spot on and all the parts are easy to install.  If you have any questions, let me know.  Also, Bill is a super nice guy at RMS and has this thing down-pat.

Thanks Brad! How is your ride doing?  I finally got my tranny tuned in.  I am going to order the paddle shifters in the near future.  I had to finally put a crank trigger in since the EFI and MDS were having trouble communicated.  Talk about spot on timing, the old 383 doesn't know how to act now.

Ragtop--I got the power steering set-up but now think the manual would've been fine since its close ratio.  The kit came with the Viking coil over, adjustable shocks.  Each one has a compression and rebound setting.  I set them on the lowest setting for ride comfort but I can torque it down for a stiffer ride.  The brakes are Wilwood.  I also went with the sway bar (1 1/16) because I was getting tired of body roll.  When I say it drives like a new car, that doesn't mean a new 1970 Cuda, it drives just as good as my '13 Mustang.  Its a little pricy, I know, but I replaced every single piece that connects anything to the original suspension but I could never achieve the performance I was looking for.  Nothing on the car is stock so it didn't bother me to put this in.  Unfortunately, I didn't take any pics of the swap.  It was completely bolt in though.  The only bolts I had to reuse were the K-member bolts, everything was new.  The only mod I had to do was remove the bump stop bracket.

Any pictures? I'd love to see how it came out. I hear with the RMS front suspension you also have a wider track. How close are you to the fenders?

Very true, the track is wider by about an 1".  I have 18s w/245-55 tires and it rubs the fenders now when backing in a sharp turn, especially pulling out of the driveway or parking spot.  Its an even trade off though.  I am in the middle of moving so once I get settled in, I will post some pics.

I love mine..  If you doing a Gen III hemi install its a must. The clearance is incredible, One of the things I like is you can remove the starter or oil pan without lifting the engine. There is some good info here on the install

Ive been looking for a donor car for the swap but not pressing too hard.  I added EFi and put a Kiesler tranny (4L60E) behind it so its good for now.  I am just test fitting everything now so when i restore it I will know everything fits.  The clearance is awesome!  I can't believe how much room there is now.  I just like getting underneath it to mess around.  I do have a leak at the moment through the stupid water jacket that will be easy to fix now with all the room.  I have no idea what Chrysler was thinking when they put the manifold bolts in the water jackets!!!!

Yep! 383, I found some ideas to seal it up better but haven't had the time to get to it.  Ive been thinking about going aluminum anyway so this might be the way to make an excuse.

I've been thinking about an AlterKtion conversion for the wife's 1971 R/T Challenger for a few years now.

Her car currently has manual steering and manual drum brakes.

I would like to convert it to power steering with front disk brakes.

The entire front suspension also needs rebuilt and might as well include new torsion bars too.
The original K member also looks a little rusted and beat up.

I'm going to add up all the parts needed like a power steering column, rebuilt power steering box, front disc brake conversion, all new front suspension parts and whatever else I'll need and see how close the cost compares to the AlterKtion setup.
