ECU installation
« on: December 22, 2013 - 02:51:23 PM »
I'm installing a P4120505 into my cuda and though I've found an installation manual, I still have a couple questions.

here's the installation manual:

http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/instructions/dcc-3690426.pdf

First question is whether or not to continue using my stock voltage regulator.

Second question is whether or not anyone's been through this before and has written up a wiring diagram for this.  Or maybe it's simpler than i'm making it.

what I've come up with so far is that the black wire from the ECU goes to the negative terminal on the coil and the green wire is not used.  I'm basically trying to merge the existing wiring diagram in the 71 cuda manual with the wiring diagram provided in the installation manual, and though I believe the blue/yellow wire will go to one side of the ballast resistor, i'm not quite sure how to handle the alternator field wiring if I eliminate the stock voltage regulator....

Help anyone???

Keep the VR. You still need the voltage o/p of the alt regulated.
Are you converting from points?

You will need a distributer that will work with that ECU.  So you were given a good question if you are converting from points.  Pg 12 diagram is the right one, but you will need an electronic distributor.

simple install , the ECU Has to be grounded properlty
the blue / yellow connects to the blue wire ,12v feed at the ballast
the black wire goes to coil ground
you need a electronic dist , I like the new fully adjustable ones , Mancini has them

I bought a new electronic distributor when I bought the ECU, so that's no problem.  Yes, i'm converting from points.

so the way I understand it now:

-Keep my voltage regulator wired in completely, no changes

On the new ECU:
-black wire to coil ground, other coil side wiring stays in tact
-green wire is not used on the ECU
-Ground the ECU body to the chassis of the car

-blue/yellow wire connects to one side of the ballast that already has the blue wire on it (in other words two wires will go to each side of the ballast, one side unchanged, and the other side has the old blue wire and the blue/yellow from the ecu on it)

Is this correct?

Also, does the old coil negative side wiring just get removed then?  or it stays?

you have it right .
the coil neg wires one si grey & goes to the tach the black one is connected to the points in the dist  & will remove with the old dist
