I am ready for the exhaust system on the 440 Barracuda. I know of several companies that make bolt-on systems and have read the many posts and articles on size and such. I have decided to go with a 2.5in. system with a flowmaster or Dynomax muffler. I have a couple exhuast shops in my immediate area who do excellent work, however they do not have a mandrel bender, which I have read is the only way to go with a HP engine and max. HP. If I bumped the pipe size up to a 3in, would that compensate for the reduction in diameter at the bends and allow me to achieve maximum HP or could there still be a disruption in flow. I have a single carbuerated 440 with 850 DP, sitting on top of a weind Team G maniflod. A thumper cam from Comp Cams resting between 906 heads that have been massaged just a wee bit. Dougs 2in headers. A local shop is far easier than other options as well as cheaper. Give me your thoughts please.   :feedback:

What do you expect to pay a local shop to build you a system?

Will they use the proper coated pipes that won't rust ? How much will the pipe cost. Do they re-coat it after welding ?
Will they have the knowledge to build a well flowing system from years of experience ?
Will the have the correct heavy duty hangers to correctly support the system ?
Do you plan to use Cuda through-the-valance tips? How much will they cost ? Will they be Stainless ?

Ask yourself these questions before you disregard the idea of buying one of those "expensive" systems. :2cents:

I struggled with similar issue, only a mild 340 though, ended up with TTI exhaust and glad I did.
Very nice system, that fits well and I hope will last for many years.

I will say TTI is way overpriced on the tips, many sources for these at 1/3 the price.

I got a Magnaflow 3" stainless x-pipe system from performancepeddler.com. Paid $368. Fit well except for a little fine tuning up front to get the pipes to line up with the collectors. Not hard to do myself with the car on jack stands. A few other members have used this system. Probably available in 2.5" They carry flowmaster as well.

Going from 2 1/2" up to 3" and not having mandrel bent pipe will not really achieve much as there will be more turbulence set up inside which restricts flow. 3" if not done properly will give you clearance issues, interfering with body and mechanical parts. Check and see if there is another exhaust shop around who can do the work, traveling a bit further will be cheaper overall.   :thumbsup:

Yea I get what ur saying. I guess after spending ohh............ between $20 and $30,000.00 I guess another $900.00 would be money well spent. Thanks yall,

Save your pennies, then go with a TTI X-pipe system.

Use Super-Turbo mufflers to save your ears.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

TTI has a complete system 3" for $670.......Well worth it in my opinion.

That's one thing I like about TTI....never had any fitment issues and I always install laying under the car while on stands...

I like to substitute the U clamps for nice stainless band clamps. :2thumbs:

there's different magnaflow mufflers. I had a 3 inch straight through Magnaflow on my 99 Trans Am.  Gets quite loud,
and really helps the cops spot you.

The Walker Super Turbos are very high flowing, but quieter, and are recommended by
TTI.  I have Super Turbos on my 3 inch TTI system on my Cuda, but I still have to wear earplugs.
