Hey Brad, I ran that test (see below) but - only using a push rod length finder tool at the moment, hydraulic lifters, and I don't have the head gasket on yet.  So either way I have to do all this over again at final assembly time. Make sense?

That one looks ok, the first picture the pattern was too narrow  making me think you did it without rolling the engine over.  :2thumbs:

Ordering pushrods from smith bros.  they were great over the phone today, customer service!!

2k ceramic orange engine paint in arrived from Eastwood yesterday.

Think I'm ready to tear this thing down, clean everything and start final assembly!

I would , thew retainers are designed for them , it will increase the surface area & protect the tip of the valve , not expensive

That would change intended geometry though wouldn't it?  Push rods are already ordered, may be too late.  May be able to compensate in the adjuster but want to stay within the spec Harland has firmly suggested. Reading about them and some think they are a good idea, some don't...perhaps leading from misuse/installation.  Confusing

From what I read most use them for valves that come up short and it's a way to make it up.

They seem like an extra couple of parts to potentially fail and bust your engine to me.  :2cents:

Or do they just replace the regular keepers? And if that is the case, what are they really for?

The lock lash are a one piece combination keeper and lash cap.
Ive read that titanium valves are a candidate for lash caps.

Finished pre-assembly and all clearance checks this weekend.  Tore it down and got the blocked soaped up and cleaned.  It's dried now and surfaces oiled.  Will start cleaning the crank now and putting it in for the final time.  Lots of parts to clean, better get busy!

Also cleared the oil pickup area for the stroked crank-

Just the way some of them come nowadays - did some research on that, cause I wondered about the colour of them too
