West Coast & central Trip to Carlisle 2014

Dare I ask but ok ok here goes. Been procrastinating too long and I am sure there are others. Just checking the reaction to see how many if any, members from the western provinces and states would be interested in a convoy trip to Carlisle 2014 in your own rides. I figure 3-4 days heavy driving each way. Convoy would provide security for the cars and coverage for each other in case of breakdown. I am thinking people from West Canada and WA and OR can travel I-90 and people south of that could travel I-80 with a rendezvous point somewhere around Salt Lake City. From there looks like I-80 would be the best route most of the way. My wife would most likely only travel 1way and fly the other direction which would leave me to 14 hour day drives while I would be solo. Anyway this would be a 12 day trip. So just testing the waters to see if there is any interest. Please respond to this post and we go from there.

I drove across the U.S. back in 83' when I ETS'd from the Army.

I kept driving until I began hallucinating from lack of sleep.

I am not going to do that. The intention here is to sleep in motels after the travel, maybe it is only 10 hours driving. This guy is getting too old to do the marathon driving thing. Turnpike fees in Ohio are $16 and $30 in PA. Figure ,pst of us who would dare take this on have some form of overdrive to keep engine RPM down and fuel mileage up. Early days yet!!!
Wife and I drove from Calgary to Toronto in 3 days only doing 8 hours or so per day. My google trip planner says 40 hours from Calgary so got to be 4 x 10 hours for me. I can do that so long as i get going early in the morning.
CP you in with that 512?? Denise could fly with Cindy.

I won't do it , the fender is still bent & I only have 5 miles on it + I have no front tires for it , the 235/60 is taller than the rear tires & they just don't make a 235 or 245 50 anymore  + no shake down time at all , i HAVE NOT EVEN STARTED TO TUNE THE 6 PACK .
 I would Co Drive but I bet it would more then double the airfair into Calgary over flying into Atlanta or Penn .

If I go I most likely will buy a vehicle there (new and have it shipped to a local dealer) and drive it back.  I would be driving I-90 back to WA.  If I it works out I'll join you.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Got the Nats in OH and Carlisle out in PA - either one is a long haul from the west coast and mountain west states. I always wished that the big national shows were more "centrally" located - someplace like KC, St Lou, or even Chicago.

Back when I had a young butt and could stay in the saddle for days on end, marathon road trips were a way of life for me. Back in '85 I drove my '70 Cuda from Sacramento to LA (to pick up a beautiful blonde "copilot" :naughty:) then on to Chelsea (Chrysler Proving Grounds) Michigan and back for the Nats. The first "day" (it was more like 36 hrs or so) I did Sac to LA to Denver - it was exhausting :faint: Took two more days to get to Chelsea from Denver.

Got a little exciting in Colorado. Climbing up the I-70 grade to Loveland pass (11,000') the air got thin and the carb mixture got real rich. The engine was loading up, chugging and belching out a black cloud behind us. For the last part of the climb I wasn't sure it was going to make it to the top. Then coming down the the Front Range my copilot was driving and the brakes went to the floor. We're flying down the highway with no break in the downhill grade and I'm yelling "pump 'em! pump 'em!" :22yikes:

Fortunately pumping the pedal worked and we were able to get safely off the road and into a rest stop. After we changed our underwear it took a little while to find the problem. I had done a complete brake job just before I left Sac. The Cuda had drums on the front and when I reassembled the brakes I mistakenly swapped the self-adjusters from side to side. So instead of automatically adjusting the shoe towards the drum, the adjusters were moving the shoes away from the drum. As fate would have it, by the time we got to the Loveland pass the clearance had become so great that one stroke of the brake pedal simply wasn't enough to effect the brake. We were lucky that we didn't wreck with that one. Fortunately the rest of the road trip was pretty uneventful.

This trip is not supposed to have any level of justification or sanity attached to it. My posting was for perhaps one last long trip where there was a great party at one end and the camaraderie of the trip along the way. I myself am 60 but I am fit enough to sit in a car for 10 hours per day so long as I get a break for five every couple of hours. My car is only 41 but I figured she was up to it as it is virtually brand new. Still the convoy approach was for the safety and comfort of whatever group could go.

If I go my plan is to buy a work truck or van from a dealer ahead of time and fly in to pick it up.  Then spend a week filling it with parts and drive back to WA.  I've done this once before and it was a blast.

I once drove 42 hrs straight through from Calgary to Toronto , stopped for a 1 hr nap twice , 2500 miles .
 In recent years I was driving 500+ miles / day in the oil feilds , put over 12,000 miles on a brand new truck in 86 days & I still average 250 miles / day here in Panama

I myself like to "caravan" it out when I could get the people.
After all, it helps to have a group driving out, in case you, I don't know, say run out of gas on the turnpike.
