Defroster vent

So I installed my defroster vent in my '70 'Cuda today and as you can see by the pictures, there is a gap of approx 1/2" between the bottom of the vent and the heat box. The previous owner had already removed the heater box when I bought the car so again I have nothing to compare it too. There really isn't any adjustment that can be made in either the mounting of the heater box or the defroster vent so my question is, is it normal to have a gap between them? Or are you supposed to use duct tape to close the gap or did the factory just consider this good enough?

My understanding (from reading several/various previous posts) is that this is normal. The design was to draw and mix cabin air when using the defroster. You're fine the way it is.

Okay, thanks, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a coupling or something else.

The pictures above appear to be non-AC cars. My 71 AC car has a "gasket" there.
