My rant about ARE wheels
« on: December 29, 2013 - 03:13:24 PM »

I thought I would follow-up with a question I had about the PVD coated wheels Torque Thrust wheels I bought back in August.

For anyone who remembers, I found that the center caps for the wheels partially cover the lug holes - this means that the caps must be removed before one can access the lugs to remove the wheel or even to just check the torque of the nuts, a safety procedure that as you know is highly recommended. With the caps in place, neither standard or thin walled sockets can be used to access the lugs.

In order to remove the caps, you have to remove 5 tiny allen-head screws.  To top it off, the heads in the screws seem to be hit or miss -- for some of the screws I had to use a different size allen head wrench. Some were too shallow as well. Can you imagine dealing with this issue in foul weather, at night or both?

Upon finding this issue , after asking about it here and looking online, I went straight to American Racing via their website.  That was back in August.

To this date I still have had no satisfactory solution presented to me. I should not have to spend additional $ and buy "tuner lugs" because of a mal-designed center cap. Not to mention, lose that special tool you need for removing splined lug nuts and you are screwed on the side of the road!

So I have been trying to pursue it.

For months I was told they were working on it.  Finally, a month ago or so, I received a set of caps with crudely-milled divots in the caps in order to clear the lug holes.   The issue here is two fold: First, what they did appears to be very "shade tree mechanic"  and sloppy. They are varying depths, and they left burs all over them.  Secondly, the caps they sent me are "polished aluminum" and look to be (very) used with scratches and gouges in them. When I asked about this, they said they could not do the divots on PVD coated caps as it would break the integrity of the finish. So the caps look way different than the wheels just being polished aluminum versus the PVD.

What I expected was a set of caps that would have been engineered to follow the wheel hub contours properly and be finished in the same PVD I paid for. What I got was something I considered very sloppy and completely unacceptable.  My wife even said "Oh, you can't use THOSE!" when she saw one on the car. And she is waaaaaaaay less anal retentive than me when it comes to car stuff.

I have since emailed them back and said that this was not acceptable...that I expected more when I bought these wheels and that I could have accomplished the same thing on my home drill press but did NOT because I knew it would look sloppy.  They have said they will look into it.

I have attached some pictures to show you what I am dealing with.

You can see in the ones they sent me ,  thyey expose part of the wheel’s center hub hole and are also all scratched up and nasty looking, let alone the wrong finish altogether. NOT what I expected!

This photo shows how my thin walled socket will not fit on the lug nut due to the cap’s interference.  It does not get a good grip on the lug at this angle. I would have to mash the socket down with a hammer or something, which would damage the caps and lugs.

In this next pic you can see how the cap overlaps the hollow area for the lugs.

In this photo, below, you can see the “hollows” the cap partially covers. The hub has the built-in “hollows” to allow access to the lug nut.

In these final two photos you will see the “solution” they sent to me. Note how they now expose part of the wheel’s center hub hole and are also all scratched up and nasty looking, let alone the wrong finish altogether. NOT what I expected!

I would buy the tuner style IMO.  At this point that would give you the access to the lugs you need.  The "key" would stay in car.  I keep mine in the console.  It's not that special just a splined fitting.

The set they sent you is hack I agree.

Here is a pic.  Sorry the wheels are dirty, it was snowing/sleeting last time she was out.

The tuner nuts are pretty cheap too.

Thanks for the reply.  yeah I think you had answered an old post of mine when this topic came up originally.

The one guy at ARE suggested the same thing...I countered by suggesting that I should not have to buy special lugnuts because of a design error....I had already bought new lugs for the wheels. My thought is why should I be out anything?   Then they sent me the hacks.

I am pretty disappointed, yeah.

I know the "have to have a special tool" argument I made isn't HUGE.....I have to carry a special wheel lock key anyways.  Still, when you plunk down good money for something it should work properly.

That does seem to be a 1/2 *ssed attempt to fix a bad design.

Exactly!  I mean, how hard would it be to just GENTLY make a dip in those areas and then finish them?

This isnt the vendor I am dealing with ....its the FACTORY.

According to the guy who I am dealing with, his "shop guy" says that they have never had anyone complain about this.   Maybe I am being anal....but I paid a lot of hard earned cash for these wheels...and I expected quality!

I have had the exact same issue , yes it is a problem ! This is my take on it,  the as with most parts they were designed for GM [4.75" bolt circle] & adapted for Mopar which is why they do not get complaints . As they said if they clearance the plastic caps the chrome is compromised & will peel , the alum caps are a better design but look like they were clearanced with a die grinder by hand . On the + side at least they tried to find a solution instead of blowing you off as most companies would

Well, true, they did respond...it took MONTHS though.

Just to clarify - the caps that came with my wheels are not plastic -- they are aluminum - the same as the ones they modified- except coated with the chrome PVD finish (its like Permabright, the stuff they use on Eddie carbs and manifolds....basically powder coat chrome) that matches the wheels.

What they COULD have done is adjust the caps and then PVD coat them.

Better yet, design the caps so as to include the SLIGHT dip that is needed rather than the too-deep/too round clearance they made, likely with a milling bit or maybe a big drill bit.  They went way overboard clearancing the ones they did, in the process exposing the central hub hole, which is what the caps are supposed to cover.

I think the capos they use must be a "one size sort of fits all" thing.

Short of doing the design correctly, they should at least include the fix, which I guess is the splined lugs.  NO WHERE on their site does it say that splined lugs are needed.

I wrote to the vendor , explaining to them what is going on just to see if they have had other complaints like this.

Like you said, I guess its because its a chevy design adapted to a Mopar one......but that dont mean its right.  I didnt get a discount because I was buying MOPAR versions.

I'd ask AR to supply the nuts. IE, "give me what I need to make your wheels work"  :2cents:

If you don't want to install the different lug nuts, I'd at least go to the hardware store and buy all new stainless allen head bolts for the caps.  That way the heads would all be the same and take the same wrench.

Unfortunately this is not a Mopar only problem I have them on another car (Ford) and have the same problem.

I can reach the lugs a bit easier than you but it's definitely cockeyed and not the best way to remove them so basically I have to remove the cap then the lugs as you do.

I heard back from the vendor and he confirmed that ARE knows it is a problem, and that is a widespread problem, and that they are willing to do nothing about it.

Shame that ARE has so little pride in their products.

Then I would buy the tuner lugs. I wouldn't want to screw around with the caps every time I remove a wheel.  :2cents:
