Paint color on backside of front and rear valance
« on: January 04, 2014 - 08:47:46 AM »
I was wondering what the factory painted on the backsides of the front and rear valance on a 71 Cuda. Was it body color or semi gloss black.

I believe the rear valance was installed "before" the car was painted. It would have some body color overspray on the back side.

The front valance was NOT on the car when it was painted. I think it was hanging by the car and probably got better paint coverage then the rear valance on the back side. The radiator blackout was applied to the rad support and to the back of the valance. The amount of blackout could have varied from car to car. My 73 didn't have very much. After the blackout was done, the front valance was installed on the car.

I was wondering about the valances too.  So during the color painting the front was not on the car but the rear was?  Was the rear valance then removed to install the exhaust system (especially tips), or were the pipes angled up an into the valance from behind?  :clueless:  Maybe the exhaust system was installed before the rear axle was?

I'm not sure how they addressed the Cuda exhaust tips.  All other models had the exhaust under the valance.  Maybe the Cuda tips were installed after the rest of the exhaust was bolted up.  I guess it's possible that the rear valance was removed before "body drop".  Maybe the Cuda rear valance was painted separately.  Cuda's and Challenger's could have had a slightly different assembly procedure.

Basically, the way it worked, is that the bodies were handing from the ceiling on a conveyer.  The completely assembled K-member/suspension/engine/trans/drive shaft/exhaust/rear end were on large carts on the ground.  The body was then lowered over the assembly and the fasteners were tightened.  As you can see by these pictures, the body has been completely assembled (for the most part) before the "body drop" process.  The interior is already installed.  The undercoating would have already been sprayed too.  Notice the front of the torsion bars are hanging from the rear torsion bar mount ready to be installed.  My guess is that "body drop" is one of the last things before the vehicle is driven off the line.
