I found a similar voltage limiter on my old engine coil, went to the 318 that was replaced with a 440. I am not sure if i need this or not. It was actually attached to the coil. i can find a picture and send if it would help. Question is, Do i need this?

No
with points they often had a condenser to prevent a spark across the points as they opened , with electronic nothing is needed , why a dash voltage reg would be on a coil makes no sense .

Not on the coil. Handy to have wired into your gauge wiring though...
