Help with a Volvo - cannot turn car off while fuelling.
« on: January 10, 2014 - 09:31:48 AM »
1999 Volvo S70 GLT auto.

I cannot shut the car off while fuelling up at the pump. If I do shut it off it will not start unless I let the car sit for an hour or so after filling.

When fuelling with the car running after about 35 dollars worth of fuel I need to stop or the car starts to run poorly and eventually stalls. This happens before the tank is full.

After the car is fuelled up I have zero issues. Till its time to fill up again.

My initial though is that air is getting trapped in there and vapor locking the fuel system. Is this correct? Is it because I have a clogged fuel tank vent?

The fuel pump, sending unit, injectiors work fine and there is no leaking gas on the ground.

Before I start replacing parts I just wanted to see if any of you folks had different ideas?

Thanks.

Have you searched for any TSB's on the issue?  There are probably some Volvo sites out there that might have info about this.

My wife's Sebring will puke gas out the filler neck once the pump shuts off.  There are TSB's about this problem.  A friend of mine looked it up for me.  There are three possible issues.  All of them have to do with a plugged filter/part.

There won't BE a vent, per se:, since all the systems require a purge cycle controlled and monitored by the ECM these days. That's a weird one; does it throw a check engine code while doing this? Could it be a marginal pump? Being sensitive to the amount of new fuel makes me wonder if the temp of the new fuel has anything to do affecting it. The advice to check out the Volvo sites makes good sense to me, since my Swedish is kinda lousy anyways. Good luck

Try asking your question here, I have got help in the past for my Volvo questions http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/

My daughter has a 2000 S70 but we have never experienced the problem you are having.

For Volvo parts I recommend this site http://www.fcpeuro.com/

I had a car that would just die while driving like it was running out of gas then after sitting for a while would start right up. Turned out to be a collapsed rubber fuel line (from the inside so it looked fine).

thanks everyone!

I read the volvo site posted and by searching through the past posts I found the answer but jimynick was on the right track. Turns out it was a Tank Purge Valve. it's a small one located near the fan shroud. 30 dollar part no more issues.

back on the road.
