I think that's probably OK.  I have a 192 degree stat in my car and the gauge reads just less then half.(rebuilt and calibrated gauges)

I can't comment on your after market gauge, but that's what I see on my Rally temp. gauge.

Thanks for the replies. :clapping:

I'll sleep a lot better tonight. Between bad gauges and getting a couple wires mixed up, I've had a hellva time putting the new cluster in. I finally got it done and everything works.

Why? Engine was never designed to run a 160* t-stat.

The original question was "is my water guage reading properly". The answer is yes.

Now onto the other topic of the best temperature for atomization of fuel the answer is as close to 180-190 as possible which lends itself to a 180 degree thermostat.

There you just got a 2fer!

Engine had been running too hot this past summer so I put it on hoping it would help.

The only thing a thermostat does is regulate the lowest possible temp of the engine.  It has nothing to do with overheating as long as it's not stuck closed.

My non-rally guage reads exactly the same but I have a 180 t-stat and an overkill 3 core rad for my 318.
