**Rant** Another reason I don't ship parts anywhere...
« on: January 11, 2014 - 01:59:28 PM »
Okay, I take my fair share of flack for advertising parts for sale, but not wanting to ship. Well, I broke down and decided to ship some 1970 Cuda/Challenger lower rear shock plates because the buyer was really in need of them and I thought maybe in the new year I could try to be nicer :blah: :smilielol:

My asking price on the pair was firm at $40.00 CDN/pair. He wanted them shipped to FLA and agreed to cover the actual postage and even $5 to cover PayPal fees. ;D

So the other day, during business hours, I took about an 1/2 hour to find a box/bubble wrap and hop in my truck...drive to the post office and get a quote on shipping. Cheapest option going from ON Canada to FLA USA was $30.01

So he quickly sent me a total of $75.00 CDN. I felt pretty bad, because shock plates, in my opinion are not worth that much :2cents:

So another 1/2 hour to print labels, box the items up and back in my truck to drive to the Post Office...again taking time away from my business.

You may think I'm petty calculating the time it takes, but if you own your own business, you'll understand that time away from the shop is time you're not getting paid for. For me ...one hour...$40.00

Here's the breakdown.

CASH EARNED:             $75.00
subtract PayPal Fees:  $3.73
subtract Postage:        $30.01
subtract lost time:       $40.00

Total Net Profit:          $1.26

So I'm very happy to report that I sold my 1970 Cuda/Challenger lower shock plates for $1.26

Here in the U.S. U.S.P.S. and UPS will come to your door and pick up your package to deliver.

Why didn't you use that option?
I would imagine Canada does that?

Service in Canada is a LITTLE different than in the States.  Like....there isn't any.
Canada Post doesn't even bring MY mail to my door....I can't imagine the cost of picking up a parcel...
Closest they come to me is 1 kilometer. And they only drop off, no pick up.
Hard to understand why they never make any $$?!?.... ::)

Canada Post doesn't really understand the notion of delivering value to the customer.

I have 25 years worth of smallish parts that I'd be happy to sell & ship inexpensively to those that need them, but the minimum charge to send something to the USA that is trackable is $16.00, and usually is more like $20-25.

And that might be for something like an emblem or a small bracket.

Since Canada Post is losing even more money, they are going to seriously jack the rates up in 2 months - a regular letter will be $1 to send domestically and I'm scared to see how much parcels will go up.

The guy ahead of me in line couldn't believe it was $1.50 for one single stamp for his normal sized letter going to the States. :sadwavey:

I paid $65 plus shipping for those plates you speak of. Lol

But I completely understand you in the shipping woes. I hate to ship as well.

Anlauto I think you should re-check your calculations.

Your calculations

CASH EARNED:             $75.00
subtract PayPal Fees:  $3.73
subtract Postage:        $30.01
subtract lost time:       $40.00

Total Net Profit:          $1.26

My calculations

CASH EARNED:             $75.00
subtract PayPal Fees:  $3.73
subtract Postage:        $0.00   The buyer paid not you!
subtract lost time:       $0.00    Next time do it on your time, this was your choice. Most employers wouldn't let an employee do this on their time. You are your own boss so at least you can do this without anyone to answer to except yourself.

total net profit             $71.27

Let me guess. You're not an accountant?
You could make any business look profitable!
I can see your point about his time (don't agree but I understand your point of view) , but not the postage.

Use a different shipping company who does pick up at your door. Your not paying the shipping any way. You did forget to mention how much you had invested in the shock plates as well in your rant. I bet if someone had stopped in to pick them up you also would have got no hrs produced as you would.have stood around visiting.....:).
Glad you shipped them.

:iagree: If you are not willing to ship, then advertise parts for free if people will pick them up and just leave the parts on the footpath for pick up, you will not have any lost time at all getting stuck talking shop with fellow enthusiasts then. Simple solution really.
I would be lost without the help of people who do post items they are selling, the price of a part will have the shipping quote from your door to the post office included, if you take a small loss on that, then so be it, parts still need to be priced accordingly anyway or you might as well just leave the parts on the footpath anyway.........
Everyone who sells parts knows this is a part of the selling expierance and accept that they have to do a bit of leg work to make the deal. If i did not have to deal with shipping at all, i have already spent enough money to have been building a real numbers matching HEMI car, the shipping costs is what is the killer in this whole senario really, they kill us guys who do not have access at all to these parts and struggle to find exactly what we are after in the first place.
So in reality, those shock plates owed you nothing sitting around, as i have a spare set from a car just sitting around also and they do not take up much room really, the price of travel should be calculated in to the part, so i think that you did alright at the end of the day, and the best part is that you got to help out a guy who really needed a set of them and was happy with what you quoted as a final price.
It is a Win Win situation really.
I wish shipping was FREE for everyone :bananasmi :clapping:

Yes I am defiinatly NOT an accountant and I do realize time IS money, but how do you not see the buyer paid postage? Parts were $40 $5 more for the Paypal charge and another $30 for actual shipping costs. Seems black and white to me who paid shipping costs... anyway not a big deal this story had a happy ending i suppose.
