My September '69 build Challenger was an originally a vinyl top out of the Hamtramck plant and was not lead.  My 70 Dart was the same way.

I wonder if it was a matter of having supplies on hand. Maybe there were days when the amount of lead on hand was running low and until the next order arrived vinyl top cars didn't get any lead or got an alternative filler.  Food for thought.

My 71 with a build date of 4/21 did not have lead, but had a bondo like filler like topcat described.

I remember vividly the filler.

It flew off like sawdust when I put a wire wheel to it.

Mystery type of a filler.   :dunno:

Probably Asbestos or something good for you like that.

From what I have read, vinyl top cars received plastic filler.  Non vinyl top cars received leaded seams.  Both Challengers I have taken apart that were vinyl top cars had plastic filler.

That is what I have heard also. Painted cars got the lead due to it being very unlikely of cracking than in comparison to a plastic filler. If the plastic cracked slightly under the Vinyl Top, it would not be noticeable. Lead was harder to work with than the plastic body fillers.
