Access to rallye clock on '70 Challenger R/T
« on: January 13, 2014 - 06:50:21 PM »
Hi...

After disconnecting/connecting my ground battery terminal, the clock does not work now. To access the clock, can you reach it through the back to remove? What is the best process to replace/repair?  Thank you!

I've only ever removed those clocks by removing the cluster first. I don't think it's possible to get to the three screws that hold it in the cluster, let alone trying to screw them back in.

As for the fix, I'd do the quartz clock conversion. You can buy the kits from Instrument Specialties, they sell on ebay too. I just did a conversion last month on a '70 rallye clock. It wasn't that hard, just take your time.

It can be done with an extreme amount of patience. Remove the radio first :2cents:

I've removed a 74 clock with the dash in.  It's not the most comfortable thing to do. In addition to the radio, I recommend removing the driver's seat so you can lay flat on the floor.

There really isn't much service you can do on the clock.  It's a sealed unit, you'll have to drill out the rivets to get to the interior.   Originals are electro-mechanical, I don't know of anyone who repairs them, everyone just swaps in a quartz mechanism.

So, was your clock working fine up until this point?

A friend of mine told me to pull out on the clock reset knob and let it slap back at the clock. I did, and my clock would only run maybe 5 seconds before stopping again. So I had mine rebuilt with a quartz conversion, and it has been fine for years now.

My clock is dead as a door nob and I was considering giving redline gauge works a call. Who did your conversion?

I had Redline do my entire Rallye Instrument/Gauge cluster a few months ago (have yet to install it in the car).  Work done included Tach conversion to solid state, clock conversion to quartz movement, Amp meter to Volt meter conversion.  Great bunch of guys, and the work was very well done.
