Front fender tire clearance problem
« on: January 18, 2014 - 10:32:29 PM »
Hi I just got my 70 rt challenger and noticed a corner of my front fender was rubbing the fire on tight turns . The previous owner has cragar as on there  which I like but I am not sure why he is running this tire combo of 215 x 70x 15 on the front and 255 x 60 x 15 I suspect the front 70 serried tire is the problem . I was thinking of buying two new front tires to hopefully solve the problem . I was wondering if using a 205 x 60 x 15 with the 255 x 60 x 15  will work . Is anyone running a tire that small on the front or will it be too small  ?

A 215/70/15 is really tall. That's a 26.9" tire in the front  :22yikes:.

I wouldn't go down to a 205/60/15, that's only 24.7" tall. If you wanted to step down to a 205, you could probably stay with the 70 series as a 205/70/15 is down to 26.3" tall. Or, you could go with a 215/60/15 at 25.2". Still a little short, but not horrible.

What's the width and backspace of those Cragar's? I run a 225/60/15's on my Duster at the moment with cop rims. That's a nice sized tire in the front, would still be shorter than your 255/60/15's but at 25.6" it'll do a good job of filling up the wheel well.

I'm using 235/60/15 on the front . This is a popular front size on e-bodys.  255/60/15 on the rear.

I'm running 215/65-15 on the front with no problems. I wonder if it has more to do with your rim than your tire.

A 215/65/15 is a 26" tire, which is pretty much the ideal size for the tires on the front. A 65 vs a 70 series tire makes a big difference- a 26" tall tire is ideal, a 26.9" tall tire is too tall for the front.

But I am interested in what his rim specs are, as that will help figure out what he can run without hitting anything.

Wheels could be the issue. Cragars tend to have less offset than other wheels and if the previous owner put deep reverse wheels on it, its sticking out too far and may be causing tire interference.

I'm running 235/60 15's all around but have to watch a sharp right turn into a steep driveway with a bigger passenger as it will just catch the front lower edge of the fender and roll it in a bit.
