Seat Belt Re-Dying?? Anyone find a successful solution?

I have a full set of green seat belts that are original to my 70 Challenger.   I know that I can purchase a new set of belts from PG Classics, but I was wondering if anyone had successfully re-dyed coloured belts to black with good results?   

I have tried using the cloth dye from the craft stores.   Boiled them up for a good half hour and results were weak at best.   I want to get my car back on the road after the 5 years of restoring, but this is holding things up.    Any suggestions are welcome.

I did mine with the Rit dye I bought from Michael's store.

I thought they came out great.

It says soak them in hot water/dye and rinse them in cold.

Re-freshing black is one thing, and RIT dye seems to work....But changing colours is a differtent ball game. You could try SEM Interior paint, but I don't know how well that will hold up either.

The new seat belts from PG may be out of your budget, but they are a really nice item.

You can sell your original belts to off-set the cost. There is a guy in the States that buys original belt sets.

If you have your original seat belt tags on, you have a few choices:

Take them off if they're in good shape and get them re sewed on.
Only dye up to the tags like I did. And tape them off.

Blot a paper towel with bleach and hope for the best.
Never done that before but worth a try if they were dyed.

I read in another forum that PG Classics seat belts DON'T have the tags/labels sewn on them. I don't know if that matters to you or not. I guess you could always remove your originals and have those put on or buy new ones from ECS.

The guys on the other other forum also rant and rave about PG's belts. I'd wait for a sale/discount code too.

No tags on the PG belts and you'll need to save your boots for the front center belts, they are not included, or they do have new ones available.

I'm currently waiting of a PG sales code too....so if you hear of one lets us know

It also appears that P.G. Classics don't sell the shoulder belts for a 70 Challenger??   Now I am unsure if I should proceed with ordering from them, although their price is good.   Does anyone know of an alternative that includes the shoulder belts?

I've bought several sets, shoulder belts ARE included. Make sure you're looking at the hardtop set not the convertible set.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but since there was mention of PG Classic belts, and the fact that they don't have the tags, I wanted to ask a question.  Several years ago I purchased a full set of reproduction seat belts from PG Classics for my '70 Challenger convertible (I still have yet to install them). They are really nice as "anlauto" stated.  I am considering sending them out to someone to have new tags sewn on.  I don't have new tags, but I've seen where they are available (like ECS, and some others).  Does anyone know if any vendors provide the service of sewing them on?   I guess I could just buy the tags and try to find someone locally to sew them on, but not sure if a more industrial sewing machine is needed to sew through the belt material.  Has anyone else had this done to their repop belts? I still have all the belts that I removed from the car, but that set contained a mix of non-original belts; and only the two retractor belts appear to be original and with tags. Thanks.

You may try a seat belt manufacturer for domestic cars for getting the tags sewed on. We have one in Westfield, Indiana called Indiana Mills and Manufacturing Inc. and they are willing to do custom stuff for us all the time.

I'd look for a local auto upholstery shop. I've used a local guy to make me a convertible boot (before they were available from Legendary). If his machine was able to sew through the folds of vinyl I'm sure it would be able to go througnh seat belt material. Worth a try before shipping them all around the states.
