Removing alarm system - ignition cutoff?
« on: January 21, 2014 - 07:54:17 PM »
My 73 challenger has an alarm system on it that I want to remove as the wiring is a mess. Was this an option or aftermarket? There's a key slot installed on the bottom of the front valance. There's a pin under the hood that compresses when the hood shuts. I removed what I thought was all of the wiring but then the car wouldn't turn over. All lights turn on so I'm guessing it's an ignition cutoff? Where do I look and what do I look for? Never done anything like this before...I'll try to get pictures asap

Check for a wire spliced into the ignition switch crank circuit. Usually a yellow wire on Chryslers, would suspect you will find the changes around the base of the steering column.

Got under the hood and took a few photos. Is this the car alarm module? It's installed on the inner wheel well next to the battery.

That looks like the starter relay.

Ya that.

Chances are that if someone installed an alarm system in your car, the module is in the cab shoved under the dash. There's also a good chance that since we're talking about a 73 you're not going to find that the system was "plug and play" ... so they probably spliced into the harness. I could be wrong, but too many shops and amateurs get out the clippers and go to work on older cars ... not realizing or caring that there are actual products made that allow you to not frickin do this.
