New life, storing car outside?!

Wondering and I need advice from anyone who has been through this before. I'm house hunting currently on the north shore of lake ponchatrain in southern Louisiana. I'm starting a new life with my soon to be wife here working for a great company paying a good salary. We're currently only able to lease. House options are very limited here and there are hardly any with garages. Knowing full well that my 70 follows me wherever I go I'm having trouble deciding based upon space for it and my hobby. We found a home with a garage but my wife hates it. It's not the best but it's comfortable and affordable. Another option is the house of her dreams, beautiful but all it has is a car port with a roof, no garage. It's in a safe location it just worries me leaving it outside all the time. It's also a good deal more $$ (almost $1500 a month) I can afford it it will just put us on a tight budget. For those with out garages what do you do? This is no super rare 70 it's a non numbers matching challenger that would be worth around 20k in the best of times. It is insured but I want to protect it as much as possible. How can I make a covered spot next to my house safe for it and put my mind at ease? Please provide any help or life advice I'm in a pickle! Y'all would know as much as anyone else and I figure a lot of y'all have been through similar situations!

One thing I would keep in mind is rodents/squirrels and such. I've heard of wiring nightmares because of them critters getting under the hood.

If you have collector car insurance on it, they will require it to be in a locked garage.  If something happens to it, you won't be covered.

I hate to say it, but if you can't get a house with a garage, I would look into an indoor storage facility  keep in mind hurricanes, tropical storms, and torrential down pours.  I lived in New Or leans for 3 years, and that always has to be in the back of your mind.

A happy wife goes a long way and building a detached garage for SFR should be a straight forward exercise. Old cars are easy to steal and a garage gives you added safety. But if someone really wants to take it, they find a way.

Mine was in a car port/driveway for about 5 years in Florida. I was on base so I didnt have to worry about crime all that much but I am currently getting the rot fixed and having the car repainted from the damage that the elements caused. I also drove it every day so it saw all the weather that Florida could throw at it. Is there a way that you could close off the car port by putting up the extra walls?

There is no way I'd be storing my classic car outside under a car port. Not only is it still open to the weather, it is just asking to be stolen or have parts removed. Either get a house with a garage or get yourself a separate storage shed remote from the house.

I had my cuda stored at a self storage place one winter when I was between houses waiting for the new one to be built and it sucked! It was away from home and it was very damp and even wet sometimes in there. Keep looking for a place with a garage or talk the wife into dealing with the crummy place for a while.

I used to manage a self-storage place. You can get a good one, but you pay more, like up to double. A lot of the good ones don't like storing cars inside, because so many cars leak.

Build a garage, you'll have a dog house to work on your car in and she'll have a castle to play princess in. Just be careful about getting your budget too tight.

I just finished my house and did most of the work myself. You could build and save.

I live in the area, I even think I bought a vintage air kit from you when you lived in TX.

Anyway, my bed advice is a rental garage. There are places that rent for $250-$500 a month dele ding on size with full utilities and ample space to work/store your car.

If $250 is too steep, get a buddy to go in halves with you as they can easily fit 2 cars. Just a thought.
