Dying panels white from tan.
« on: January 24, 2014 - 08:31:22 AM »
So I was on my arch nemesis kijiji yesterday and found a fairly good deal on interior panels (front and rear with arm rests and wood grain inserts) for a challenger but they are tan. Is it possible to dye them white and whast product would you use? I hear about SEM and thier landau black but do they make a correct white for the 74? ...and what is the correct white for 1974? all my panels currently seem a bit parchement coloured and not the bright white I see in other cars.

also how hard is this? i am contemplating between repop's and originals. Are all challenger door panels the same form 1970-74? I uderstand some had power windows but otherwise are the all the same?

You want SEM "Super White"..you'll need about 5-6 cans to do all the panels as well as their adheasion promoter.
Yes the panels are basically the same 70-74. They will scratch.

You can beat the quality of the new Metro panels though :2cents:

Will this super white match what is currently in my car? i know it;s hard to say without a picture but it's not nearly as white as the picture of the repop's listed on places like this:

I am aware that is the non corret one for my car but here at work they block most pictures so this is the only white one I could see. Was there only one white color?

Legendary Interiors used to sell Palco panels which you DON'T want. You want the new ones manufactured by Metro.

Metro also sells white paint to match their panels. It's slightly more accurate then SEM Super White.

The SEM is a decent match for the factory white interior parts, I've been using it for years.

who sells metro parts? I should price it out. I am pretty certain I can re-use the arm rests and inserts and just hit them up with some dye to make them look new.

As for the Tan panels they are for sale for 2 rears, 2 door panels, woodgrain inserts, arm rests and seatbelts for 300 cad. I was trying to goa cost analysis against dying thsoe ones vs buying new re-pops.

Just an FWIW. You'll never find original white panels for sale. For some reason the white panels didn't resist the sun well and got "chalky". Case in point, my car originally had a white interior. The tops of the door panels were like a rock. Felt like crap.   :o

Likewise, if you have a good set of original challenger tan interior panels, I would be interested in buying anything you have.

If you decide not to buy the tan panels, please let me know where they are and I'll try to purchase them.  If that occurred, I would of course part the kick panels out to hemiken.

I am going to pass on them but here is the ad:

You can call the guy or ask for more pictures I really wasn't very concerned about the condition of the finish as I was planning on re dying them.

hemiken, I didn't see any kick panels in the pictures but I ask about those too.
