I am looking at buying a 70 Cuda 440 six pack that’s been sitting in a barn in my area - but I have a few problems w/ what I am seeing. The Vin number on the dash is BS23V0BXXXXXX....so this states that it is a 440 6 pack car. The fender tag and the door tag are missing. The car has been repainted purple- but not the correct shade. The car is originally purple...its all thru out the trunk, engine compartment, under the carpets - behind the door panels - .  The VIN numbers in the Radiator support DO NOT match the dash VIN. The Vin numbers on the cowl area are almost non existent….impossible to read. I looked the car over really well and could not find the broadcast sheet….although I did not rip up the carpet.   The engine is a  factory replacement. Correct date castings but no serial numbers at all on either pad.

Is there anything I can look for on this car to verify what it truly is??  It has manual disc breaks and a Dana rear. What else do the factory 440 six pack cars have that might help me pick this one out??

A couple of quick things to look for: factory torque boxes in front of the rear springs, skid plate on front of k-member. Also check the vin# under the trunk weatherstrip and see what it says.

Unless the car was in a front end wreck and the rad support was replaced I`d be very suspicious of the vin not matching.Check the tranny for a vin number also.

Torredcuda - the VIN on the tranny does not match the Dash vin or rad Vin.

Go Mango - exactly were under the weather stripping is the VIN code??

Does anyone have a pic of what the torque boxes look like??

Thanks

Non of the vins match?  I'd say that it's a rebody.

Fabman a rebody is when someone takes a junk car from rust, fire or other damage and clips the numbers off and welds them on another car. In a sense you have another car with numbers from another. It almost sounds like the dash pad is out of another car where the VIN tag was still attached.

As mentioned before you can look for torque boxes and I think the number on the K frame and torsion bars maybe special for a six pack car but I'm not positive. There are a ton of good honest friendly members around here so maybe there's someone in your area that would be willing to check it out with you. Remember blind fold them during the ride there. LOL

There should not be any VIN numbers under the trunk weather stripping of an E-body, that is A, B & C-bodies.

A rebody is when someone takes a VIN and / or other body numbers from a desirable car  that is wrecked, rusted, parted out etc. and installs it / them  on a "donor" car to sell it for more than it may have been worth if left alone. It is a federal crime to swap VIN numbers from one car to another.

It sounds like a VERY good car to avoid.

:iagree:

That car sounds very fishy to have three different V.I.N.s on it. :outtahere:

:iagree: Thats what I got when I first read it.  :( In what shape is the engine? Whats he asking? If the engine itself and the car seem to be in good condition 440 6bbl clones are fetching some big $$$ done correctly.  :dontknow: ;)

The car is in general good shape. It has  a replacement motor -does not run but it does turn over.  Does not have the correct tranny, rust in the trunk - and all the fenders - the interior is that of a Grand Coupe..(kind of a give away that the car is being cloned) - He's lookin for 17K....

I thought that was way too high for a car thats not what it's suppose to be.

Then theres the question of the non matching numbers around the car...How would that be handled?? :???:

Basically you have what could be a nice car once resoted, but under the circumstances a car that is by no means #'s matching. I'd bring these different vin #'s to the owners attention and ask him why the discrepancies, then ask him if any sale could be made upon your ability to get a legal title for the car. Also I'd have to say that 17K for the car with these problems and needed body work is high, with not seeing the car you probably can expect to spend another 10K to get it running and on the road, perhaps more depending on what your after. But if a title can be obtained it is a car that could be a lot of fun, just not a #'s car, and we all know there are a lot of those on the street, right?
