Drive in movie theater.
« on: January 26, 2014 - 08:08:25 PM »
Here's my latest build.   Being a member of the older generation (56) I remember going to the drive in movies as a young kid. Mom would pop up a big brown paper bag ( no plastic bags then) of pop corn, get a cooler of Shasta pop, throw in a bunch of pillows and blankets in the back of the family car--a 1962 Chevy Impala wagon--, load up me and my siblings (I'm oldest of 6 kids)  and off we would go. The movies were mostly Disney flicks like  The incredible Mr. Limpet/ Don Knots---comedies----and for a 8 to 10 year old, the ever cool GODZILLA's. We used to go a couple of times a month. Back then Boise had 3 movie theaters that I remember.  When I was a teenager and got my first car---1965 Chevy Impala SS--at 16, we would still go to the drive in quite often. Or that was what I told my folks then. Good excuse to stay out past my midnight curfew.    :grinno:    The movies changed to more of James Bond ( early 70's) ,  R-rated film's like the ever popular  Russ Meyer flicks,     :naughty:   and others.  One thing about that 65 Impala was that it was a large roomy car inside, with an even bigger trunk. You could fit 3-4 guys in there with no problem.  Just had to put a bit more air in the Hijacker air shocks.        Refreshments  and other items   :smokin:   changed also, but stories  from this time shall remain untold.      :grinno:    The last drive in movie I remember going to was Kentucky Fried movie  with a rather adult cartoon called George of the jungle IIRC.   Not sure when the last drive inn closed here, but it has been quite a while.  The closest one still operating is in Parma. Id.---about 40 miles west of Boise.  I am def. going to fire up the cuda and go at least once this summer. Just hope I can stay awake driving home.    :eek4:     OH Well--lot of good times. Are there any left around your area's, or is this something the younger crowd is missing out on.

This is still a work in progress. I have to finish up my snack bar interior. Need to make a popcorn machine, soda foutain, fill the case with candy bars, ect.  Add a bunch of signage like the dancing pop and hot dog cartoons you saw at intermission saying come on down to the snack bar.  Posters of comming attractions on the wall, and other items.  Still lots to do. Stay tuned for more.

Those young guys in the front row keep changing places which is really annoying to us in the second row. Could you have a word with them please.  :nono:

Ok---last few.  Forgot to show how the snack bar comes apart .  Will add sinks, toilets, urinal ect to the bathrooms.  Will definately have to make a black charger to replace the red one. Any other ideas you guys can think of----all suggestions welcomed.  Still a lot of winter left.   :swear:    so I will keep on building.  Thanks   Doug

Once again, you've outdone yourself.

Now, if you could just add one of these inside the building, and stream the movies, that would be the icing on the cake...

How about putting a picture on the screen . . . Like maybe the phantasm cuda or something?  They could be watching vanishing point as well!   Nice job for sure!

To add to the realism to the scenario would be fogged up windows in a few of the cars.

That looks so cool. You need one of those mini projectors I've seen on tv lately. Then you could have real movies playing. Need a car with the trunk popped and guys climbing out

We are pretty lucky there are 3 of them in business up here in Northern NY 2 are with in 20 miles of me Rome drive in has 2 screens, play two seperate double features each night. And Valley Brook has just been updated, there were rumers of it closing down due to all the new digital movies but they are still open! The other is outside of Alexandria Bay but that is about 2 hour drive for us. And yes it is VERY hard to stay awake to the end of the second feature now!!Very Cool indeed!!!

A must and great idea on the movie pic. Mopars seeing a cuda on screen. Love it.

Great job on the build by the way. We have one drive-in left and plan to take my cuda there when road worthy.
