70 challenger rolling shell
« on: January 28, 2014 - 02:42:49 AM »
hey guys first post of what i'm sure will be many here. i've been out of old mopars for 16yrs now but after my kids were watching the fast and furious this week i got the bug again.i found a 70 challenger minus all bolt on body panels that a restoration was started on before the owner passed.i have not actually seen it in person yet but am told the frame rails are solid, allready had new floors and trunk pan welded in. and has "pretty solid quarters"it does have the front of the  door jamb rotted out thou. it also has   the full interior and all glass plus 6 boxes of parts. not sure what all is in them.i'm picking it up for 250 bucks only problem is it's about 400 miles away. the way i see it with all the parts i can't go wrong so will be picking it up this weekend. it no engine or trans but was a 318/904 console shift car in lime green. what does this sound like it's worth to you guys? my father inlaw pretty much runs a body shop and specializes in full mopar restorations so i can get plenty of help if i restore it or i could part it out and make some money. but e bodys have always been my fav when i was 16 my dad and i went in together on a 73 340 4 speed ralley chal that never got finished before being sold. since then i've had 2 72 318 3sp chals and a 73 340/727 cuda and a 68 charger 440/727 that got me a reckless driving ticket for poping the front end off the ground sold that it the morning of my wedding 16 yrs ago to a 16yr old kid for 3500 bucks and have regreted it ever since(even thou i'm still married to her) so heres my   chance  to get back in the game even thou i know it will be years before i ever get to drive it. sorry this is long winded i guess i'm excited about it and waiting till the weekend is killing me. anyways what do you guys think?

Sell the parts and use the funds to buy a more complete car.  It will be a never ending sinkhole for money.

If it has a title and is anywhere near as solid as they say its an amazing deal a console could be worth the 250$. If you don't want to restore to OE then use this to build what you want. A solid body shell of a 70 should be worth 3-4k even empty if parts

70 v-8 Challenger or Cuda cars are worth putting back on street. Sounds like car has never been outside of original, is that right?  You could make a nice R/T tribute from that. ;) . Nice find.   :cooldancing: :working:
My wife ?   O.K.
My dog ?    Maybe

Without knowing what you have for parts it is hard to tell if you should keep it or part it out. Some pictures or a list of parts
is definitely in order here. And as said, keeping it for a parts car and upgrading to something more complete is
also a good option.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

If it is a solid body the other option is trying to find a rusty parts car for all the missing stuff. I think half the fun of restoring a car is hunting for stuff at swap meets but I may be a little  :screwy:

i'll post pics this weekend once i see it for my self. and yes it does have a clean title. from what i've been told it was disassembled to be restored all parts and bolts are bagged and tagged.but everyone has a different opinion on condition so i'm expecting the worst but hoping to be surprized.after looking online i'm seeing it will need around $2500 in sheet metal alone. if i do keep it i'd make it a 4 speed car for sure but not sure on the engine it does come with big block torsion bars so a bb is always an option. and i'd either paint it plum crazy or sublime. what sucks is years back i gave away a ton of parts and even junked a 72 chall after a mild front end collision.thats about all i know about it for now.i  have the uhaul trailer reserved and am just hoping the next 4 days go by quick lol

Welcome to the site and at $250, you can afford to sink a few quid into the old gal with your Dad's help. Enjoy!

picking it up at 10am tomorrow. just talked to them to confirm the plans and they said "you know it won't all fit in 1 trip don't you" turn out it comes with a 440 block and a complete front suspension for a big block.they say it's more of a garage clean out then anything and i get everything mopar. now my only worry is how my 98 1500 is gonna handle the weight of the car hauler for about 300 miles on snowy roads.i'm actually trading them for my boat that i have about 250 into so right now the only cash out of pocket is hopefully only around 300 between the trailer rental and gas money to pick it up.pics coming soon

You'll be fine. (2) 440's (2) transmissions , a u haul trailer , a barracuda vert stacked to the roof with parts on a ford 150 with 180 k miles on it made a 450 mile trip for me a couple years back.

i hope so so far the first 200mile  leg of the trip went for crap got 27 miles from our hotel (aka my moms house) and i notice the boat trailer is viberating a little bit and of course the kids had to pee.so we pull in to a rest area and i find i had a set of trailer bearings go out and the tire hit the trailer popping the bead. found a trailer brearing set at wally world and got the tire back on the rim only to get back to the boat pound in the races and then notice my axle isn't a standard 1in trailer spindle.four hours later i ended up with a boat and trailer hanging out the bed of my truck. dinner at 2:30am and am now looking for a auto parts store that opens at 7 to get the right bearings so i can still make my uhaul reservation in time. wish me luck

wow did i hit the mother load ended up taking over 4 hours to load everything up.the 440 block is everything except the crank and oil pan.3 set of heads 1 set 906 and i think he said the other 2 are 452's? can't remember for sure. 2 sets of rods one being from a 440 6 pack cam is a 508 lift  i'd have the check the box to be sure on the duration but i think it is a 284.a set of big and small block torsions and engine mounts nos 2 speed wiper motor both bumpers a perfect driverside door all the glass execpt the passenger side door all kids of trim 2 and 3 sets of some of them 3 sets of headlight buckets,a box of seat belts 2or 3 auto shifters and linkages full set of black interior panels the counsel has a big piece broke out of the front of it but i could superglue it for a driver. and thats just what i can think of off the top of my head right now my bed is full plus the inside of the car.gonna look thru some of the boxes tomorrow before heading home as i'll be leaving a good amount of the parts in moms barn downstate as i'm not gonna have room for everything in my shed. over all the car is as nice as they said but i think it was still worth the headaches of a broken trailer then driving 35-40 thru all the snow today. the tail panel isn't there and firewall/cowl have some rust issues but the frames rails look good as do the inner fender wells. the pass side rocker and quater both have dents and both quaters will need a patch behind the wheel.i'll post a pic nce we get home tomorrow as my wife forgot her card reader. the truck handled the weight pretty good only issue is the gas mileage and stopping hat much rolling mass on fresh snow. it's still gonna be a huge long project but i think it might be a good start
