Alan:  The 1970 chrome guards are longer than the 1971-2 ones.  So the 1970 cushions are longer than the 71-2 ones.  I believe this is because of the size of the opening for a 1970 valence where the insert is attached. My 1971 slant six car has the front bumper guards and cushions as an option, the bottoms of the guards come pretty close to the plastic insert.  I think that a 1970 set would actually touch that insert.  The 1972 insert uses the 1970 front valence but I guess that once they changed the guard size in 1971, they just continued the use of them in 1972, kind of like what they did on 1971 Challenger front fender body side mouldings.  They shortened them in 1971 to accommodate the wide potmetal trim option offered on those cars. For the 1972 to 74 cars, they just continued to use the 1971 mouldings even though they no longer offered the wide pot metal trim.  What do you think?
