Please help me find my car.... with pictures.
« on: January 30, 2014 - 04:43:32 PM »
I need some help Maryland people. I grew up around the Pikesville Maryland area and I want to find my old High School car. I do not know the vin and Maryland DMV says that without the VIN number they can't be of any help. I do know my tag number was GYD-731 when I sold the car in 1986 or so. Here is some info on the car as i remember it.. Any help would be appreciated.
1971 Challenger
Tag number in 1985 was GYD-731. I think I recall selling the car to a guy around Harford Road near 695. The car was originally a 318 car but had a wounded 440 in it when I sold it. Color was black/black/black vinyl top with a tuck and roll dash cover. Car was in very good shape but had funny waves on the top of the driver side fender. There was a push button starter switch in the dash.
I have enclosed a picture. Hopefully someone knows something. Please share this with others who you think may be able to help me.

You might want to see if you have any old insurance paperwork.  That usually has a VIN on it.  Or if you still use the same company they might be able to search their records for you.

Great thought and I tried that this morning. Allstate was very helpful and they were able to find my old policy but it is so old they say that all the vehicle data has been wiped off of it.

I grew up in Parkville at Harford Road and 695 at that time and I don't think it's the car but there was one close to that description around that time.  It even had the hood tach like in your pics.  He painted the car green at the time and I think his last name was Ensey.  Went to Parkville Senior High at the time.  I know I butchered the spelling but it's phonetically spelled. He worked at a garage about 1/4 mile south of the beltway on Harford road but that garage is now a 7-11.  However, I know he sold the car years later to open his own garage.  I know I haven't been much help.  Good luck.

Gary,
triple black '71 cars are more of a rarity than you think.
Your story has a close proximity to a triple black Challenger I personally know of, but it's a 383 car purchased from the Boston area.
I have seen/heard of close to 21 1971 triple black Challengers. I am sure there are more, but the REAL triple black cars are  abit of a rarity(smaller percentage take-rate), as the market trended to the hi-impact colors offered during that time period.
Mind you, this is my LIMITED knowledge, so I don't claim to be right, or wrong- its just a tabulation that I made from shows, magazines, enthusiast sites, etc.
What options did you have? I am sure if you posted more detail, you might get more respnse.

Thanks Dan,
I will see what I can add. Like I said the car is (was) black with a black interior and black vinyl roof. As for options it had a remote drivers side mirror, slap stick shifter, poptop gas cap cover, chrome wheel well openings, magnum 500 wheels. I am sure I am forgetting a few items. Suspension was stock save for a pinion snubber. I believe i sold the car with 906 heads and a DC 509/292 cam. I will add more if I can think of anything else.

I will look into that. I was able to track down my parents insurance agent from 25 years ago. The guy had an amazing memory and remembered my parents and remembered my car. He is searching his garage of records so HOPEFULLY he will come up with something.
