New instruments in Rally dash
« on: January 31, 2014 - 07:01:07 PM »
I made this to see how my Rally Dash would look with Speedhut meters. Not sure if I can make them fit though, have anyone tried this?
I wanna try to keep the old look but I want modern instruments.

Its just a Photoshop mockup, gonna try to figure out if I can make them fit before I spend a grand on the meters. I'll probably have to make a new frame to attach them in,  and somehow try to duplicate the slanted shape of the originals fronts. I need to remove the bezel and glass from the meters I get. Maybe I'll order the clock and try, thats only 70 bucks. (GPS speedometer is 300). Don't wanna ruin my Rally dash either by cutting etc. Was hoping somebody tried this already :)

I have the same idea. Given it a lot of thought. According to my measurements the speedhut gauges should fit inside the old rally gauge openings. I have not started however. It will require fabricated back frame. I purchased a rally bezel off e-bay. I will document if and when I make the attempt.

The 4" gauges right? I think the bezel has to go and you have to modify the face plate of the gauge to fit. Looking at my back frame now and its gonna be hard, all gauges are at different angles and they have different depth also. I also do have a standard non Rally dash in my car right now, maybe I can cut that up and use as a starting point for a new frame.

I'm looking at the 3 3/8" gauges. They measure 3.6" on the outside of the bezel. The inside of the rally gauge bezel is about 3.75" if I remember. I think once I build a new frame to mount them and possibly trim the rear of the rally bezel they should look pretty good.

I looked at those also, and you are right, they will fit better that way, the reason I'm looking at the 4" is so I can get the scales as close as possible to the original face plates, the 4" is about 3,75, inside the bezel, that way I was planning on removing the bezel. But it would be much more difficult to mount those. Hopefully you'll get to it before me.. ;)

btw, what I say bezel, I mean the ring bezel on the new gauge, not the Rally bezel.

I talked to the guys at Speedhut, they sent me a video of a gauge taken apart, very helpful when trying to figure out how to do this. I don't want to post a link here since their video is not public, but if anyone wants to see it, message me. Also, all sending units etc will work according to them.

Me too

I actually bought  dummy gauges before purchasing mine. They cost $57 for 2 dummy gauges. one in 3 3/8 and one in 4".
The 3 3/8 fit inside the bezel tube of the original bezel with the outer ring(bezel) of the gauge on. These looked small to me
and the 4" fit nicely behind the tube. I bought a set of the 4". Tried to come up with a way to mount them, but had no luck so far.
this pic below is one of the ways tried, but didn't like it. They look better behind the bezel than on top of. They also don't show clocks
in 3 3/8 or 4.This is the set I bought pictured. They are custom and were on black friday sale. total was $630 for all 4. Now if someone
can figure a way to easily mount these, I'd be set.

Lotsapins, good info, I figured the 4" will look good, would be great if they could be mounted recessed in the "tubes" as stock. I was thinking of maybe not use their housing at all, and just use the faceplate and the electronics, somehow. I wonder if I can fit the circuitboard in my excisting frame... I guess I have to order one and take it apart to see if it can be done. Really nice Challenger build your'e doing!
