The bezel had to be machined flat on the backside, so the gauges could butt up to the bezel. Then he wired them. I wish there was a better way to attach them to the dash and put the bezel over, but this is what he did.. Here's a pic.

ok gottcha, I see what you did there. I may be hunting for some parts at carlisle this year.

My original idea was to use the stock frame with the meter housings, take the meters apart (not use their housing) only use the faceplates and electronics, and try to make them fit in there, but to do that I first had to buy all the gauges, destroy them, and there is no guarantee it will work, so I might just have to go with Redline when the time comes.

That would be a rough ride that may not work. This was done by my fabrication guy up in Michigan. I'm, in St Louis , so doing it without my input was difficult, but the way I understand it, the gauges wouldn't go into the old pot metal housing enough to get the bezel where it needed to be. They were almost like on top of the housing. Eliminating the housing got the needed room, but getting the gauges attached was a chore. Either way the bezel backside is curved to match the plastic lens, so that had to be some how machined flat. if someone had the time and ability, making a new housing from sheet metal or? would be ideal. I didn't want to spend the cash on R&D for him to try. That's something that a guy does on his own for his own car.(time + labor = 0$) If someone does, make a few because I would be interested in one.
That being said, I don't know Redlines capabilities. If your using a NAG1 trans like me you don't have an output for the speedo, it runs off the computer. Mine is using a GPS speedometer, so no output is needed. Also will the gauges work? Tach has to run from one of the coil packs. The speedhut gauges are adjustable for all the different possible tach outputs. Is the oil switch and the temp switch compatible?? . So you see this is almost a necessary evil when doing a Gen 3 hemi swap.. at least for me. I see the the aftermarket thunder road bezel in lots of cars, but that looks cheap. I wanted to stay with the factory style with modern gauges. Plus when searching for parts all you need is the  switch panel and cluster bezel. No destroying the original and possibly valuable gauge package. Here is what they look like lit up. they have a small dimmer dial to adjust the brightness. picture is a lil blury.

Looks good Lotsapins! Thats how I want it to look if I decide to go Speedhut (only difference is that I want mine black). And yep, I'm gonna use the NAG1 also. Since I completely took the car apart and put it in a rotisserie now, I kinda put the gauges on the backburner for a while. But Redline does a GPS speedo conversion with the stock look though. And you are right, getting them in the stock frame is a very timeconsuming task, if even possible. I will post updates here when I get to my gauges, maybe in a year or so :)

Something to think about if your going to have Shannon @ Redline do your gauges. I've had him do 2 clusters, beautiful work. But turn around time can be 8 months or more.   :2thumbs:

As much as I like this forum. I sometimes have an equal amount of hate because of threads such as this.
I had a custom dash plan and now seeing all your great options the simple plan just got harder and more detailed...

Still good though.

I hear you! I was just gonna fix my headers and change piston rings....now my car is on a rotisserie waiting for a 6.1 Hemi and a NAG1

:roflsmiley: exactly where I was/am. I built a very custom gauge layout using Autometer gauges and then saw that Rallye set up; so a lot of $$ later I have the gauges, new bezels, etc. I will build something to hold the gauges independently of the bezel, I just have not had time yet to do it, but I will. I would rather not modify the bezel but if I have to then so be it.

Its going to be hard not to modify the bezel since it is curved where it meets the gauges. Besides you can get a bezel cheap compared to the gauge cluster. Get one from a 73-74 that has the warning light hole. They are cheap and easy to come by and much less desirable than the 70-71 type. Change the woodgrain tins and it covers the hole. Your going to need the tins anyway since you no longer need the clock reset or trip OD hole anymore. But if you design something that will work , keep me in mind as I would love to have an alternative way to mount them.  :clueless:

Already have all of that, just got to get to it. I agree that I will have to probably trim the back of the bezel to make it straight verses the angle they have originally. We will see, I am wrestling with the passenger door at the moment, but I will get to the gauges soon.

I wonder if they are angled so they are more visible while sitting in the seat and or to keep glare  away?  :dunno:

Can't comment about the glare part, but they are definitely angled so the driver doesn't have to really turn he/her head (believe that was the intent). Not super effective but pretty neat. I want to keep this angle aspect, just want to make it so it is more like stock than a complete all in one gauge cluster. I also want to be able to remove one gauge at a time (replacement, repair, etc).

Yes, I assume the curve was to effectively have all the gauges point to the driver.
Now my altered version (because of you guys) I like the look of them below flush. Going to see if I can form something around the edge when I put the holes in.
Here is my blank slate. All the curves were a pita...

Nice! What do you use to make the curves like that? I assume you dont have an english wheel or such pro equipment.
