help with carbureted 6.4 hemi in 70 challenger
« on: February 01, 2014 - 11:55:59 AM »
im building a 70 challenger convertible resto mod and have been kicking around engine ideas. i decided on a gen 3 hemi and really like the new 6.4 but i'd like to go with a carburetor instead of efi to keep it a little more simple. has anyone here done this and can give me some advice on what they used? should i get a short block and build it from there? or am i better of starting with a motor out of a wrecked srt8.

I think INDY has an induction setup for those engines. They sell new intake manifolds and carbs for those.

I not sure if its much simpler with a carburetor though, I believe you still need a special harness and engine controller to run it.  I saw some where that somebody converted a HEI distibutor to the front timing cover to run the ignition

That bp crate looks nice but seems a bit pricey at almost 18,000. do i need a computer to run the ignition or is it just a module? or if i use the hei setup that would eliminate all my elictric complications right or am i missing something?

also that intake from indy looks like it would work great but I've heard so many bad reviews about indy that it kinda makes me hesitant to use their parts

You will not be able to run a carb setup with VVT personally I do not know why you would want to, You would lose a bunch of HP and fuel economy just by doing the swap.

With that said we have a plug and play system that can control the engine if you are planning on keeping EFI.

Why would I lose HP with a carb set up? A lot of the 6.1s I've seen seem to get more with a carb that's also easier to tune. I mostly liked the idea of a the carb to simplify things instead of having to modify the tank and fuel lines and needing to have a whole computer setup to run the motor. That and a six pack would look much cooler than a throttle body. That being said I don't know much about these motors so y does the vvt change how the plugs are fired?

The Power loss we have seen for carb setups is because of the intake change (runner lengths) and efficiency of EFI compared to carburetors, As for tuning we developed as system that is plug and play that do not require any tuning on the EFI system. As for using the the other engine managment systems out there like fast or mega they cannot control the Variable timing or read the new Crank trigger
