Has anyone converted a 71 console to 70?
« on: February 02, 2014 - 09:53:02 AM »
I read here in another post that you could remove the ash tray and cut out the opening at the back of the console. Has anyone done this and how does the inside of the hole look?

Can someone post an up close pict of the opening in the back of console.

If no one has a pict can someone measure the opening of the seat belt hole.

Thanks

I was looking at that ugly hole a while ago, wondering what the purpose was, didn't know then it was for the seatbelts.  Found a good picture in this thread, at the bottom:

Seems to be a different bottom on 70 and 71.

You know, I did a search here and also on moparts and couldn't find anything. Searches never work well.
Thanks for the info, it helps a lot   :2thumbs:

Can someone measure the hole for me?
Thanks.

Hey Fern,

The bottoms are slightly different, but it is a conversion that really is not hard to do, and if done correctly, you will give the illusion of it looking totally correct for 1970. If someone who knew what they were looking at looked in your console at the ribs, that is the only way to see the difference, i think the screw tabs are in a different location and hieght, and i think their is an extra rib. You would still be able to use the hole as what a standard 1970 console hole was used for, like soundcontrol said, it is only to hold your seatbelts while not using your shoulder belts when driving. :2thumbs:

I think I am going to try and cut the console, can anyone measure the hole size?
Thank you  :2thumbs:

Wouldn't it just be simplier to buy 70 console?  I know it may be a stupid question but just my. Opinion.

I think the ashtray looks way better, always thought something was missing in the 70 console.

Hey Shoooter  The hole in the back of a 1970 console is a place to put the seatbelt buckles when not in use. They changed the size of the hole and filled it with an ashtray for 1971-74 consoles. :2thumbs:
