    vacuum pump

    Does anyone here run an electric vacuum pump for their power brakes? Is a canister needed in addition to the pump or will the pump keep up without a canister? Do youo have any pics of your set-up? Any input whatsoever, good, bad or indifferent.

    You obviously have a low vacuum cam to require this. If you have power steering then why not go for the hydra boost setup? I hear the vacuum pumps are not reliable or consistent under single brake application then multiple pedal push situations. Just won't keep up. Brakes - not something that should be short cut on. Brads70 posted a brake line and hardware schematic once from me that shows what you need hardware wise.

    Read through some of the older posts between yourself, Brads 70 and someday. I am very interested in this. I had the same concerns with the vacuum pumps as you described. Is there a certain year Chevy Astro that will fit? I know you talked about the 95 year I believe. Will other years fit? Is the hydro boost and MC off the Astro or would I use the MC I already have?

    I used a 95 Astro HB and a 86 Ramcharger mc. You simply need a mc that has the lines coming off the correct side. Also the Ramcharger setup has a single reservoir. The Astro setup should be easy to find. When you do send me a PM and there are some things you need to know.

    Went to the pick a part yard today to search for a hydro-boost system. I found a system on a 97 Astro and a 2002 safari. Definitely hydro-boost systems. These systems are sitting at about a 30 to 40 degree downward angle in the van. Do this systems sit that way in all of these vans or are the ones I saw the wrong ones? Do we straighten these out in the E bodies with the mounting brackets?

    That will work, I have the same one I think. It will be mounted straight  when you make/buy the bracket.

    I sent you a PM. In it I also mentioned straight. What that means is my unit is virtually straight comparing the mounting bracket being 90º approx to the C/L of the hydra boost system. Could have been mounted offset in the van, can't remember as it was so long ago, with the final mount angle determined by the firewall mount in the van. I have a spare unit at home (given by a friend who junked one) so will take some pictures in 2 weeks.

    I guess you can get away without the swivel portion but I used one on mine. Female thread goes on to revised MC pushrod and pin on Mopar bell crank goes through rod end swivel. Don't forget locking nut on HEIM or whatever you use.

    I pulled the hydro boost yesterday and bought everything for 50.00. It looks identical to the ones I have seen here with the exception of the mounting plate. It is designed to sit the booster at an angle downward. It looks like the bracket will come off by removing a clip and/or large nut on the backside of the mounting plate. It would be easy for me to make a mounting plate. Could I add the thickness of the original mounting plate to the 1" thick spacer. I thought someone here made some of those spacers out of aluminum. Yes Stroker I found the pics. I am on station today, should get home sometime tomorrow and will post some pics of the unit and plate.
