Mopar Action - Power Steering Tweak?
« on: February 15, 2014 - 05:20:09 PM »
Anyone interested in a real world test of the Mopar Action power steering tweak?

I am converting to power steering on my cuda this winter (I hope).  I have never driven a mopar with power steering, so I am not sure what to expect.

I was looking at the mopar action mod to reduce the pump pressure and improve road feel.

Should I just go ahead and do it, or should I install the pump I have as is, and see how it feels and then go through the mod and give everyone some feedback.  Or have the results been covered in depth already.

It depends on what box you plan to install. A Firm Feel stage 2 or 3 might not need the pump mod. If you are just installing a stock box then yes, the mod would be a good idea.

No it's been around for a while.  Mopar action has it available in PDF format:

It is a very easy mod. I did my brothers 73 Charger last summer. Summit Racing sells a kit for about $20, you get 4 or 5 .019 shims and a metal sleeve to hold the valve in a vise to take it apart to add the shim to. Or you can make your own shims.
Steering box was a stock, no feel box. IIRC the original valve had .042 of shims in it. We added 4 of the .019 shims for a total of .118.
To get to the valve, remove the 7/8" nut from the backside of the pump housing, spring and valve reside down in there.
Steering definitely had a much better feel.
I'm sure if you had a FF or Steer n Gear Stage 2, you could add shims to tweak the feel if you wanted it a little stiffer.
