18x12 and 18x9.5 fitment questions?
« on: February 21, 2014 - 02:57:49 PM »
I have a '73 Challenger and wanted to know if anyone has put a 18x12 wheels in the rear with a 6 5/8 back space.  I have the leaf springs in line with the frane rails and a stock rear axle width.

On the front, I can get a 18x9.5 with a 5.5 back space but am not sureif that will fit.  The car is Hotchkis equipped and has disc brakes all around.  Any opinions?  I can get the wheels really cheap so let me know what you guys think.  I can resell the wheels if they don't fit since they are really cheap for custom pieces.  Came off a Mustang.

I guess it's possible. This is the wheel well of a 73 challenger.

I have 17x9's with 5" of backspace on all 4 corners of my '72 Challenger with 275/40/17's. In the front 18x9.5's should be right on at 5.5" of backspace. 275 is about as wide as you can go, I had to do a little rolling on my passenger fender to keep from rubbing, and that's with -.9* of camber. I have a little room to the frame at full lock, but it isn't much, probably a little less than 1/2". But in the front, 18x9.5's with 5.5" backspace and anything up to a 275/35/18 should fit.

In the back I have a B body rear end with Dr Diff's 1" spring relocation. With the 275's and 17x9's I have exactly 1.5" to the springs and the quarters, so a 12" rim is going to be pretty tight. You should be able to run an 18x12 with a 335/30/18, that would take up an extra 1.2" in either direction compared to my combo, so a little over a 1/4" clearance to the spring and quarters. The problem is, 6 5/8" isn't enough backspace for an E body rear. You need an extra 3/4" backspace compared to a B body rear, so that would put you at needing 7.25" backspace to make that rear combo fit. If you had a 68-70 B body rear in the back, it would be almost perfect at 6 5/8" backspace on a 18x12.

Jvike has that set up on his 'Cuda but he the xv motorsports level 2 suspension and has the trailing arms moved 1 inch with the dr diff kit so it's possible. I'm also trying to do the same thing with a different set up. I'm not so sure the size you want in the front will work with how short the stock suspension is. Hopefully more members chime in that have it

I think a 275 front tire is perfect and will be running -2 camber.  The rear might get a set of wheel spacers temporarily.  Really great info guys.  Thanks a lot!  I'll post pics in a couple of months when I get the car on the ground.

Too late at night.  Not wheel spacers but crossing mh fngers that they fit without a different rear.

The only way to know for sure is to mount them up, but based on the measurements I'd say they're not going to fit. If the math is right, they'll stick out past the quarters.
