440 six pack intake manifold
« on: February 26, 2014 - 08:31:57 AM »
I've been searching the archives but can't seem to find an answer.
Does anyone know when in 1970 the 440 six pack manifold went from aluminum to cast iron? Didn't the early '70 cars come with aluminum?

I've read 70's cars came with iron intakes.
1969 cars had aluminum
but I don't know for sure
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

I know Alan knows and I believe he said the A12 option sometime in mid 69 had Aluminum intakes.

But I'm sure he will come in here and correct me.... :smilielol:

All 1969 A12 cars had aluminum intakes....there are recorded 1970 cars being built with the remaining aluminum intakes before Chrysler started casting them in iron.  :2cents:

The original poster was asking when that switch took place which I have no idea of. :dunno:

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like the aluminum intake will be used and we won't worry about it.

Apparently the 6-pack setup became so popular in 1970, that Edelbrock could not keep up with orders,
so Mother Mopar went to iron.  That thing must be heavy!

That's the story I'm familiar with. I was just wondering if it was acceptable for an aluminum manifold in 1970. Apparently it is for a very early car.

Why would they be more expensive?

I would think based on supply and demand it would be the other way around....Unless, I guess you're talking about the "new" aluminum intakes vs original cast manifolds. :dunno: I think they're all around $300

Thought some of the early Superbirds were found to have aluminum intakes, and yes I know all birds were early.

I'll be looking at the Indy Swap meet this weekend. On e-bag, the cast iron ones are running between $500 and $600. Reproduction aluminum about $350. Haven't seen any original aluminum.

My 1970 Challenger has a scheduled build date of Dec 06 1969 and came with a Chrysler/Edelbrock aluminum intake. I have known the car since new and that's how the car was built. Galen Govier decoded my car and he confirmed that in his registry he has documented  several known original 1970 E bodies and Super Birds with Dec 1969 build dates that came with aluminum intakes.
I knew that the general belief was that 70 cars should have cast iron intakes and at the time I was thinking of switching mine up just to avoid any skepticism but Galen convinced me to stick with the original aluminum intake as it was correct for my car.
