headers with best ground clearance
« on: March 01, 2014 - 12:43:31 AM »
I currently have1 5/8'' hooker super comps on my 408 stroker. i'm thinking about getting a set of tti's or dougs. will I gain any noticeable power? wich of the two have the best ground clearance?

This is a great topic.I don't have Hookers or Doug's, but I can give you info on TTI and the ground cleanerce is still rough on my short deck bb. Passanger side sits lower, and the block is level in the car with new motor mounts.

Its great Info to find out which header gives you better clearance, however expensive I think custom headers are the way to go.

there are only 3 that go above the steering link , TTI , Dougs & the 5115 Hooker anything else is truly  horrible for ground clearance , I have no experience using Dougs though

Well, I'll see if I can clear something up first. Hooker Super Comps don't come in 1 5/8", only the Hooker Comps do, part #5901. Those also go below the steering linkage, so the ground clearance is pretty horrible.

Hooker Super Comps, #5115, are 1 3/4" and stay above the steering link, so they have pretty decent ground clearance, much better than the 5901's. I have 5115's on my Challenger. They should also be an increase in power over a set of 1 5/8" headers on a 408. Maybe not a big increase, but they'd help a little especially if your heads are flowing good numbers. That power would be mostly on the top end though, so you probably wouldn't notice it much on the street, but your dyno numbers would see it and probably your ET's at the track.

As far as TTI's or Doug's, the TTI's also come in the 1 3/4" tube size, so that should be a similar improvement in power vs. a 1 5/8" header , and an improvement in ground clearance if you have the 5901's.

The Doug's header should provide the best ground clearance. I have a set on my Duster, and bought them because they sit about 3/8" higher than the TTI's. You can't get any tighter to the frame than a set of Doug's 453's. But, they're also a 1 5/8" header, so they probably wouldn't provide much of a horsepower change.

For an E body the TTI's are probably the best option. The Hooker 5115's are pretty respectable though. The Doug's are great headers, but unless you're super concerned with ground clearance you give up a little of that tube diameter. I like the Doug's for A-bodies, just because they fit so well and because TTI's are the only other option. For an E body you have more space for the bigger tubes, and more options with the 5115's.

since my exhaust is complete and ceramic coated from one end to the other i'm trying find dimesions on all these headers for simplest install. the only one that shows dimensions on the website are tti's. is there another source ?
another question: tti website says their headers are 38'' wide and 15.5'' tall. how would I measure my current headers for comparison? I assume the tall is from centre of exhaust port to centre of lowest tube ?

There's no "simple" install on any of these headers. Even on an E-body. As far as measurements, I wouldn't assume that's how the TTI's are measured. My guess is that's highest point on the header to the lowest, ie, the size of the box it will fit in.

As far as your current headers, just see if they go below the steering linkage. If the steering linkage is threaded through your current headers, the 5115's, TTI's, and Doug's will all save you a ton of ground clearance.

I have Dougs 2" headers on my 70 cuda. Love the look, sound and went right in with NO MODS of any kind. It is tight going past the RH shock tower when lowering the car down over the engine when doing a new install. If the motor is in the car you are in for some work either way but once they are in you will have plenty of ground clearance. If you would like I can get pics and measurements tomorrow when I get home. Never had TTI's but some guys rave about them as well. The Dougs headers are built really strong and tuff.

correction on previous post. I did use head studs on the engine, so I had to chamfer the under side of the header flange to clear studs but the header flange is so thick and strong it was still plenty strong.

I use TTI here. I cant give you a reference on Dougs or any others, but I have done this with some success , assuming you have tranny tunnel room you can gain some ground clearance if you change your driveline angle slightly. This keeps your exhaust collectors from pointing straight down .Most mopars are set at 3 degrees down , You could go 2 deg down and put a 1 deg shim under the leaf spring without any major problems.

I have Hooker Super Comp's #5115, good clearance , easy to get to the spark plugs.

My 'Cuda is a 340 had them with the auto trans. & stick shift trans , power steering & manual steering.  big starter / little starter, no complaints at all...

If I were to buy new headers it would be the same or maybe a good step header..

Wow, big difference from my comps
Would you be willing to take a measurement for me? I would like to know where the header flange ends up, I phoned hooker and all they could tell me is that there longer than the comps, I would like to know exactly where so I can choose the header ( tti or hooker) that requires the least amount of changes to my exsisting exhaust.
Tti gave me a very detailed schematic and they seem to hug the tranny more than my current headers, I'm hopeing the super comps will possibly line up with my exhaust and I can just shorten
