IL cornfield newb
« on: March 04, 2014 - 10:29:07 PM »
This is my 2nd post ... forgive the breach of decorum.

I've been browsing this forum for over a year, pretty much when I decided I was going to go ahead and find a beat up 73 and do a custom build. Not too long ago I found my project and have been stripping a trio down to the bones. It's pretty much National Guard project ... 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year type thing. Though I'll be trying to cram extra weekends in as a can ... a few hours here and there so long as the wife allows it.

Anyway ... that's my intro. I'm sure I'll have questions to ask and advice to seek.

Welcome to the site!  Sounds like a fun project . . . So what are your plans for the car?   Pictures?

Welcome to the site and don't fell TOO bad about your rate of restoration- it's a common affliction, speaking for myself that is.

No pics as of yet. The wife's first rule was that she gets a 69 Camaro RS. The wife's second rule ... not in my garage.

So this project is taking place on the farm ... which is 20 miles away ... in a barn with no heat. The salamander can only bring a drafty barn's temp up by about 10 degrees on a windy day. Hoping to get more stripping done this coming weekend.

I've got two donors ... but other than a hood and trunk lid ... not much there. Maybe a fender to two. I may strip those down and see what the market is for a bare unibody.

Black is the color inside and out. I'm not a fan of wood grain ... simulated or otherwise, so I'm thinking carbon fiber or brushed aluminum. Nothing came with any of the drive train with the exception of two rear ends. So this car is pretty much a blank canvas.

I want the 340 and I'm kicking around the idea of Edelbrock's Pro-Flo 2 and backing that up with TCI's 6x (six speed auto). I'm in the dark about the cam, heads and rear end.

I'm a little bit of an audiophile and I spent most of HS and college messing around with and installing sound systems ... so strangely I already know what to do in that department. I'll go with a plate set up in the rear deck supporting a Polk DXi 6500 components. Classic industries sells kick panels with a 4 inch cutout so I'll go with Polk DXi 400s there. I was kind of excited when I saw a kick panel that accepted a 4x6 because I prefer plates and components to coax ... but those were for Abodies. I'll run a pair of the same DXi 400s on plate in the 4x10 in the dash as a center channel.  I wish Polk made a 4 inch component set ... I would wire the two 4s and the tweeter as a center channel, but slap a half inch port tube on the plate and shove a baffle behind it ... but they don't. All of that will run through an audocontrol 5.1 dsp ... and I haven't settled on a head unit yet.

So ya ... I know color, interior ... and audio. Just looking for a lot of feedback on the drive train. I'm not concerned about original equipment ... this is going to be a custom screamer.

Welcome to the site. I'm not too far away from you. I live over in Farmer City. We'll probably end up crossing paths at some of the local shows in the area.

Welcome greenie youll find lots of great help and advice here.  I can understand the wifes position as my wifes first car was a 69 Camaro and its still in the family though badly in need of restore, But unlike you, I took over the garage so she has to wait till im finished then we may roll the Camaro in and start all over again.  good luck with what you do oh ya cut out some of the drafts by lining the inside if your barn space with plastic it'll help a lot on windy days

Sprecks ... probably will. I'm looking down the barrel of my 41st, my daughter is a year away from the U of I, and I've had the itch for a pony since I sold the 81 Z-28 Pops and I spent two years building ... that I drove until my daughter's first birthday. I went to school at ISU and we played Farmer City every year in HS football. For the past 17 years it has been 4 doors and sliding doors and rarely a show unless it has been close to the back yard. I think it's time for a mid-life crisis.

Small world Racer. In college I worked for Consolidated Communications. Once of twice a week about 5 of us would have to race from CU to Charleston ... though I never could figure out why it was called Eastern.

Dougs ... small 2 car garage and 3 cars with a wife that won't put up with not being able to park her car indoors means Cuda in the barn. I put up some tarps and that helps, but with the salamander putting of kerosene fumes and a cutting torch putting of fumes of its own ... that little bit of venting needed almost negates anything the salamander puts out.

Once I'm done cutting this thing down it'll go off to my brother's shop for any patching, spotting, grinding, and sealing ... if he's got the stall and lift to spare. At this rate it'll be next summer ... and instead of freezing my hind parts off ... I'll be sweating them off.

Thanks for the offer but I'm going with a pair of 4 inch in the 4x10 plate to run as a center channel.

Good luck on your build.  I grew up in Paxton, moved to West Lafayette, IN but until a couple years ago, frequently went to Hoopeston to take in the movies there at the Lorraine.
